Countdown to Ep 5: "The City That Dares Not Sleep"

Whoa is it time for one of these already? Probably not, but here it is anyway.

So yeah, July's pretty close to done so it's time for the Final Count..down... thread. Hm. I didn't expect to go there at all. My apologies.

I'm Jake, and as many of you guys know from elsewhere on the forums, I wear quite a few hats around the TTG offices. The last few months, I have been fortunate enough to wear the hat of "director" for the final chapter of The Devil's Playhouse, "The City That Dares Not Sleep.".

I'll be hanging around this thread for between now and release, answering questions and dropping amazingly obscure, indecipherable, impenetrable, mind-rending hints about the final episode. Which you guys will surely figure out within like ten minutes, causing me to freak out thinking I've unwittingly spoiled the season finale for you. Fortunately, you'll then inevitably second guess yourselves and get it all horribly wrong a few days after that.

The episode was written and designed by Chuck Jordan (writer/designer/director of The Penal Zone, and lord overseer of the whole season), who is enjoying his new exotic life outside the office (which means he's probably at home on his couch playing Limbo on XBLA), but hopefully he can be coaxed into stopping by as well to help field things, too.

So yeah, the questions, the speculating: Fire away!

Uhhh, uhhh, bullet points.... Stemmle had all those cool bullet points. Dammit. Bullets.

I am less prepared than Mike "Master of the Countdown Thread" Stemmle, if you didn't notice. My bullet points, however, far outclass those of any prior thread. Feast:
  • It's the last episode of the season.
  • It features some very nice decorative clocks and lamps which I think you'll enjoy.

What more do you need to know?

    Oh boy... :D

Is Max going to stay like that for more or less than half of the episode? :)

Do we get to see Bluster Blaster again?
Do we get to see Bosco?
    Is Skunkape actually dead?
  • edited July 2010
    IS SAL DEAD
    IS SKUNKAPE DEAD
    IS PAPERWAITE DEAD
    IS NORRINGTON DEAD

    Those are the questions.
Also, will Max's psychic abilities play a large role in this episode as well?

    1. Will we be thrilled and surprised by the events in the episode?
    2. Will we see the return of Gordon the Brain?
    3. Will the toys of power be in the episode?
    4. Will we find out the truth behind Bluster Blaster's future vision?
    5. Is there any meaning to the 'wave of lawfullness and good will' spreading through the city at the beginning of the Penal Zone?
    6. Will Harry Moleman have to step up to fight giant evil Max?
    7. Will Sam finally lose some weight - I mean, come on, the guy's huge!
    8. When will the episode be released?
    9. WILL THERE BE A MUSICAL NUMBER????

Ha ha, I didn't see that before :D

Please let there be a musical number, or I will send Demon Max to the Telltale Offices for some "negotiations"!
  • edited July 2010
    Ok, this is fast.

ok, now the question: Max's steps equals which grade in Richter Scale? (And how you ended with that hat this time? Will be permantly?)

Whoa, wait, now? Does this mean we're gonna get it in August? Or will it be September as I expect?

Why is everyone assuming September??? Telltale have been very prompt with their deliveries of the episodes this season and making us wait that long would be cruel...
  • edited July 2010
It just seems it would take longer. I mean, it is the finale, and the games so far have been extremely cinematic and stuff. I dunno, maybe it will be August. *shrug*

Basically because the Final Chapter of ToMI took a month and 1 week instead of only 1 month and Telltale hasn't said the date for this chapter (The original trailer said "Finale" instead of a month like the other episodes) which make to everyone to think in the worse case scenario just in case they decided go to with the worst case scenario (Or be extra-happy if they go to the best case scenario instead ^^!)

Every episode of Tales of Monkey Island arrived later every month, remember? It was like 1 month and 1 week between every single episode, but only the last one, where that moved the episode to the next month, did people really notice.

With TDP, they've kept things more even. I suspect an August release, since the Narrator explained that the episodes would be monthly.

Wow, wasn't expecting this for another week or two. Oh, right, my question...

Are Stinky and Sal still plotting to off Grandpa Stinky in this episode?

Will Sam ever find true love?

Wait-what are we suppossed to refer to Max as now that he's a hundred foot-tall demon?

Clocks and lamps?!? No way!! I love clocks and lamps!

Now please give us an amazingly obscure, indecipherable, impenetrable, mind-rending hint about whether or not the Narrator has any role in 305 beyond narrating.

    Thanks!

Let's analyse this repeatedly until he finally answers. Where could we possibly see alll these clocks and lamps???? Which location could they appear in...?
  • edited July 2010
Will we see the office? Any characters returning from previous seasons? Is the DeSoto okay?
  • edited July 2010
Nearly every interior location in-game has a lamp and/or a clock.

But the most notable one that has both is a location we all wanted back but have yet to get back aka their office.
  • edited July 2010
I'd love to just return to the office just to see what's still in the closet.

Will any new physic powers be introduced

will we get to use the max mode we got to use in the final battle of 304(where he is able to "will" any power of his choice without the toys of power)

Hold up-I thought that the DeSoto carried off Sybil and Abe to their honeymoon, and the car itself is possessed by a demon. Can you say 'Continuity error?'

They brought the car back between seasons, but Abe & Sybil are on an extended Honeymoon, which is a nice way of saying "Don't expect to see them this season."

Here's some stuff to probably not help you out much:

    Absolutely.
    2. Will we see the return of Gordon the Brain?
I missed the part where he actually self identifies as Gordon. Does he actually say that's his name, or does Skunkape just say "Gordon's alive?!" That has confused me since I first played through.
    3. Will the toys of power be in the episode?
    When have they not been?
    Answer hazy.
    8. When will the episode be released?
I played it last week. You guys should catch up.
    9. WILL THERE BE A MUSICAL NUMBER????
There are some music related moments, but no singing.

Just "Max," as always. But I'm sure he wont mind if you call him something weird.

Half of your wish will be sort of granted.

    Yeah!
  • edited July 2010
We won't actually kill Max, right? Just like, undemonify him?

And how is Sam so calm about it?

Hmmm, I'm guessing the closet, since I'm pretty sure the office was destroyed in 301...

Jake, Did you do any additional writing in this episode? What have you been involved in the most while sitting in the directors chair?
  • edited July 2010
    So in 305,

    How many new toys?

Will we get to control Max through his extreme demon rampaging?

Will Max Mode come back in extreme demon version?

    Will Sam go commando?

    Will Superball go commando?

Will Sam hold the psychic powers?

Will we get to see Bosco? Please? Pretty Please? Okay ignore that question.

Will you please answer only 3 of these questions?

I think I wrote one line of dialog, from pickups. Chuck wrote almost the entire script, and Mike Stemmle helped with a few of the last minute pickups and hint lines. My job as director has been mostly making sure that all the stuff Chuck wrote into the script stays on track and in the game as it goes through production. I've also worked with the choreography/cutscene guys and the animators to get the big moments playing big, and figuring out which things maybe aren't as important. I worked with Jared on figuring out the tone and style of the music for many scenes, and directed some of Sam's voice sessions. And I did a little bit of effects stuff like I do sometimes. Mostly though a lot of keeping an eye on things as people more clever and talented than me make the game awesome.

I hope he is, there are so many great Sam costumes in this Season. We just need one more for a complete set.
    Okay, no problem!

Okay to Bosco coming back, or to ignore that question?
    Sure thing, friend!

Specifically, does Sam put his hand inside the pudding head; put his hand inside the pudding head?

Yes, I'm going to ignore the fact that he says there is no singing for now and wait for the episode before getting angry.

But isn't the "seibert" button basicly "Caps Lock" and "No Punctuation" with hints of "Poor Grammer" put into one button?
