It worked for me (Win7) But now the Save Games are gone -.-'

Yup ... I finally got it to work but now all I see are three empty boxes labeled New Game ... seems all of my previous games are lost *sigh*

Well, that didn't work for me. I downloaded the episode 4 files and put them in the folder. Then I opened the game and Clicked "get" and it immediately said it was installed. So, I tried to play the game and it locked up. So, I shut it down and restarted it and Now the game opens in Window mode (instead of full screen like it always did before and asks me for my user name and password to unlock the game (like the first time I played Episode 1) and when I enter the info, the games locks up and doesn't go any further *sigh* I checked the Temp folder and it's empty ... I moved all of the downloaded files out and tried to play the game again, but I'm still in window mode and being asked for my user name and password ... grrrrrrrr

UPDATE: I finally got back into the game and now when I went to click "get", it says "coming soon" ... maybe TellTale has removed episode 4 until they fix its bugs?

Word for word, this exactly describes the sequence I went through.

And add to that, my save games are gone too, and at the end of it all, I'm seeing the "Get" button again, and I'm back at 0% with no internet connection. One step forward, two steps back.

Well the Save Game Files are still there, but the prefs.prop (or what it's called) file seems to be corrupt due to the crash of the game previously.

    Awesome!

I'm still fucking around with episode 3. Tried EVERY possible fix I could find on the forums, but nothing works.
If I only could get as far as to try and download episode 4. I don't even know what happens in episode 3 yet!!

OP, I would like to thank you for providing these links with the extra bonus feature of having ALL SAVE GAMES AND SETTINGS deleted. And thank you also for not even hinting at this possibility in your post; made the surprise that much more meaningful when it happened.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks for the feedback. I am doing some updates to the first post right now.

That was entirely unexpected. Several people also have reported that with the regular installation, so it's not the method.
You might be able to restore your savegames by using right click, "settings", "restore previous versions".
If the files are still there, use it on the prefs.prop. If they are gone, use it on the "The Walking dead" folder.
Make a backup of the folder first.

@DjNDB Don't worry, it's definitly not your fault.

First, I deleted my backup too soon.
Second, TTG f***ed up their release (again?)
Third, it's release day, nothing is gonna happen as it should.
  • edited October 2012
Downloaded all files. It jumps to 60% on installation, then immediately fails. Which is exactly what happens without installing all this.

    Anything I'm doing wrong?
EDIT:Actually this may be it, are the "WalkingDead104" folders supposed to be where you said already there for me, or are they not there and I have to make a folder, because that is what I had to do for 104 and 101-103 aren't even there.
EDIT2: The hell? Manually searching "WalkingDead104" gives me the proper folder... in the location I was already at, but this one has walkingdead103 etc... as well. Wonder why they didn't show. Trying again
    now.
EDIT3: AAAANNNND it failed. instantly says I've lost connection.
EDIT4: Wait, my Walking Dead files are in "GameSync" is this correct? Should I move those to Walking Dead?

DJNDB it seems like a lot of people are having their saves deleted and a lot with the internet connection issue such as myself. I'm delighted to say that I have not tried your method due to some issues that are occurring. I have made a back up but I still don't want to risk it for a biscuit ;)
  • edited October 2012
hm in my game it still says "coming soon" under the 4th episode.

*fixed by reinstalling the game* i usually delete all saved games with the installation and later copy and paste a back up into the folders.

hmm it's tempting but I don't know medium

I simple follow this great man's way and downloaded his files and paste into the respective folders and make sure the temp folder is empty and click play. His method worked since episode 2. :) So give him not some but all the credit!

I just reinstalled the game again, and this time it said under ALL episodes "coming soon" LOL WTF? Now I am downloading the game AGAIN from my account in the store...
  • edited October 2012
First didn't work (crashed when starting ep 4 and lost my saved games, had a backup though).
Tried it again but made sure I deleted the files in the temp folder first, restored my saved games and now episode 4 starts.
Restarted the game and episode 4 still is marked as 'installed' and seems to work, thanks DjNDB !

I had that too yesterday in my VM installation. I am not sure what helped, but i think deleting some of the files under SyncFS did the trick.

What does deleting temp files implement ?
  • edited October 2012
Well I see a lot of people complaining but it worked fine for me. Thank god because if the official telltale downloader had kept it up I would have had a fit.

But yeah when you do something like this always back up your files and don't get rid of them before you are 100% sure it is working. And even then it might be handy to keep them so you can always restore your files should anything happen.

So thanks for doing this because I don't think I would have been playing the latest episode otherwise!
  • edited October 2012
There's a 'Temp' map in the 'SyncFs' map, deleting the files in that map made it work for me.

Now I suddenly have the black screen at start up problem after I downloaded the game FROM THE OFFICIAL SITE. Now the whole game wont start up unless I replace the preferences file from my back up files, but it's no use cuz I still cant reach the 4th episode. When all folders are copied into the telltale folder, black screen :/
  • edited October 2012
There is always a new freaking problem. Now when I click at the start up page the license crap appears again, so I click ok yeah get the license and the second time I try to click to get the game started it wont let me click anymore!
  • edited October 2012
When you manually download the files and just put them into your

    \Users\***\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Data\**episode**

folder, the game will maybe launch but immediately crash. What you have to do is to copy the files into the game folder here, too:

    Program Files\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\GameData\Pack\***episode**

If there is no episode folder in your game directory, create it, Episode 4 would be:

    Program Files\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\GameData\Pack\WalkingDead104

I tried this method but, gives "connection failed for:" for all the files.
  • edited October 2012
This is ridiculous i'm not gonna download each individual file for each episode. Especially since the guy who put these on here doesn't even have a Mac to test it and he's not even from the U.S (no offense) this is awful that we all have the same downloading issue with this game and telltale just doesn't care.

I still dont know how I was able to finally get the game working again and REPLACE that file. You are right it was indeed that file that is responsible for all the settings, like whether you play full screen or in window mode. Now I just have to be a little more patient getting the files implemented into the client. I think this depends on how fast the internet is at any given second lol. The solution to this problem overall is high speed internet, but it's quite ridiculous by telltale to expect this from all its customers.

AT LAST! I reached the starting sequence of episode 4. After clicking "get" like a 100 times on each episode they're installed. Already looking forward to installing episode 5. *cough* lol

edit: I seriously installed this game like 50 times and the license problem seemed to be fixed by changing the password like 5 times so that the login screen would reappear and let me log in anew.
  • edited October 2012
YES! I forgot about my daily Windows Backup ;D Luckily I could restore to a previous "prefs.prop" and can continue my storyline now. Awesome! Good Luck to you guys!

I have tried numerous times to download but its not working. It downloads and then says windows can't open file. I've tried this for the last 4 hours and am getting a bit frustrated. I don't know what else to do, even sent TellTale support an email. Episodes 1 thru 3 all downloaded just fine, no problems at all..... I can't figure out why episode 4 is being so difficult. What else can I do?

It's sad that it doesn't work for everyone, but so far it's the only workaround that i know for this issue.
It downloads and then says windows can't open file.

How are you trying to download the files?
It sounds like your browser might try to do something weird.

You can try the manual download with a different browser, or try the python download script.

I have had to install all 4 episodes manually, just do it with episode 4 but make sure you keep back up of your saved games and just in case all folders.

I have tried the manual download numerous times, using the Json and python. I clicked on the links provided under Episode 4..... could be that I'm doing it wrong. I finally received a response from Telltale:

    Hi Julie,

Please ensure you have a strong internet connection and are logged into your telltale account before attempting the download. Also, you may try connecting to a different network.

    Thank you,
    Matt

I'm not sure what part of the game is messed up wasn't understood but apparently to them it boils down to it being my internet connection and not a malfunctioning game. I wrote him back and told him there were numerous people having difficulty downloading the game and if they took the time to read the support forums or the Telltale Facebook page they would know that. I'm getting beyond aggravated

Yay! Now my save files are "gone" too! Thank you very much >.>
The save files are still there but nothing I've done has made the game recognise the files... this sucks so incredibly damn much!

If you have a recent Windows version and haven't disabled that option, you might be able to restore them by right clicking the "The Walking dead" folder, selecting "properties", and "restore previous version". If that's not working, you can try it on the prefs.prop only.

McMurphy you only just deleted that Temp in the SyncFS folder without doing what DJ... suggested or you did what he did aswell ?

Well in my stupidity I tried reinstalling the game, but now I can't download any episode at all due to the ******* connection error >.> so any attempt to restore the files to their earlier state (a system restore didn't fix this) is futile... I think I'm gonna go outside and bury myself...

That's unfortunate. I don't know how else to restore the files if there's no backup.

I made the warning to make a backup a bit bigger then the other text now, so it won't be missed easily.
