I did as suggested in this thread and downloaded and copied it manually. And yes, I was able to install episode 4 this way.

BUT - When I wanted to play and loaded the game, the game crashed and after restarting, the game was in the windowed mode, in another resolution and all save games were gone.

I did change the registry as suggested in another thread, but the savegames are still not back. I will try tomorrow to delete the game and the folders etc. and do the registry stuff again.

Does anyone else know how to get the savegames working again?

The easiest way is to copy back the backup.

If you didn't make a backup (why?), you might be able to restore them like this.
  • edited October 2012
I guess, I didn't take notice of the backup stuff, because I pressed the link from another thread and there it just said "download the files for the pc and copy them". And that I did.

I solved the issue by following your advice and restoring the folder from yesterday. It works again ... ufff. So thanks for the help.

But seriously .. why wasn't I able to download episode 4? Why didn't TTG fix this? Why do the savegames get lost and I therefore have to make a backup?
  • edited October 2012
This somewhat worked for me, except most characters are invisible while the rest is missing their eyes. So thanks for the instructions, DjNDB, it was worth a try, but I hope Telltale get their shit together very soon.

I am glad you could restore them.

Make a backup, in case anything ever happens again.

You can also try installing Episode 4 again using the instructions in the first post of this thread.
I don't know why some people lose their savegames.
I also hope it gets fixed though.

If you get a crash using the work-around then right click on the WalkingDead104 folder you copied the files in to and make sure to untick read only (after copying the files in), when it asks if you want to apply the settings to all folders and files within that folder, then you should agree.

The game seems to have trouble booting for me otherwise and throws up an error.

    Worked for me anyway.

Worked like a charm on my PC (episode 4)

    Thanks a lot !!!

Same here. I click get and I get the error. There ist however no f**ing way that my connection is lost since there is not one single problem in anything else. Shame on you TTG to deliver such crap downloader. Never had such problems before - why did you change the system?
  • edited October 2012
Nope, this didn't work. I downloaded the Ep3 files, cleared the temp directory, and ran the game and selected get. It immediately told me there was a connection failure. Tried it 5 more times, same problem. Re-deleted the temp folder -- re-did all the other steps -- no dice.

Now apparently on top of it all, my savegames are gone. I'll restore from the backup, but I have a sick feeling that I've just plunked down my hard-earned money for only 2 episodes.

I tried this a few times. Had to delete the .json files after saving all and the 'ingame' download said 'installed'. I attempted to play and the graphics loaded with corrupt static like graphics. Audio had Lee telling Larry's daughter she isn't coming with them. The game began to load and I see Lee in the middle of the courtyard with his arms stretched out (hands at shoulder level- spread eagle) same for another fellow facing the building and Duck's dad at the corner (arms down) staring at the corner of the building. Can't play...

I finally managed to download ep 3. DjNDB, I think your manual d/l method is missing a file for Ep3 -- I tried the automatic method and it d/l'd one extra file. Regardless, thanks for the workaround!

Frustratingly though, all of my savegames are gone! I tried to restore from my backup, but it didn't work for some reason. Then I went back to a system restore point from yesterday when it was definitely working, and my savegames are *still* not loading. And yet I see all of my saved games sitting in the directory. How is this even possible?!
  • edited October 2012
It didn't work for me on my PC. I followed the instrucions and it did say installed, but I closed the game to delete the temp file and when I started the game it was back to the usual get no connection failure debacle.

You delete the FILE inside the temp folder and NOT the TEMP FOLDER. I think this is why it's not working for you

You MUST delete temp file BEFORE entering the game

Thanks for the info. TTG updated and added some files for the earlier episodes. I just updated the links for EP2 and EP3 to the latest versions.

That makes it more complicated to keep this working for the manual download.
The automatic download always uses the latest .json files, and therefore doesn't need that kind of maintenance. I'll have to think about what to do about that.

The savegames should work the way you restored them.
If you still see the save files, and the savegames don't show in the game, that's usually an issue with the prefs.prop being overwritten. Since you restored all the files, it doesn't make any sense. Did the game launch with default settings after you restored the backup?

Can someone please upload the latest .json files for episode 2-4 for Mac?
I need to check if the links have changed in there too.

After crashing the manual way I've tried the automatic download and there I seem to have a problem. The attached file does not have the extension "py" and I cannot open it with notepad either. What am I doing wrong?

It is a .zip file. You need to extract it first.

    Okay....

I tried this method both manually and using the Python thing, and I'm still getting the same problem with the internet connection. This... is starting to get ridiculous.

    Hey,

Thanks a million for this solution!

It wasn't all that was needed though. I had to also follow the instructions here:
    http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=695838

Before i did that, this is how it all went down:
    1) downloaded the files and copied them to the directory "%userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Data\WalkingDead104". Temp-folder was already empty.
    2) started the game, clicked to continue and waited out the normal not responding -state.
    3) went to download and clicked "get" and it almost instantly switched to "installed".
    4) went on and clicked play for episode 4 and it started, but the graphics were buggy (missing textures etc)
    5) restarted the game and even though the files were still in the 104-directory, ep4 had gone back to "get"-mode and efforts to download it just resulted in the normal "connection failed"-error instantly.

Then, as instructed in the above mentioned thread:
    1) i copied the folder WalkingDead104 also to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\GameData\Pack" and started the game.
    2) After clicking continue, the start screen where the news roll horizontally just would not go away (waited 5-10min), but the process was responsive so i just left it hanging there in the background while doing other stuff for a long time, maybe an hour or so.
When i checked if it had advanced, there was the login screen asking for my telltale credentials.
    3) i logged in and went to the download-section and now everything seemed right and ep4 was in installed state.
    4) started to play ep4 and everything seems to work normally now

Of course, what telltale is making us do is completely unacceptable, but it works now so thanks to all of you who help people getting the game working and good if this post helps someone else.

Telltale: You owe the customers an official apology and a reasonable compensation for this mess. E.g. a free game that works.

I did (with winrar) - still it has no extension.
Anyway - I finally managed to get it working by using the manual solution

    Backup prefs.prop
    Started Game
    Clicked "Get"
    Exited Game

Downloaded the files in a seperate folder
    Deleted Temp Folder fromm game
    Copied Files in correct directory
    Started Game
    Got Error Message about License
    Edited Registry to initializationInProgress=true
    Started Game
    Re-Entered Login Dates
    Clicked "Get" (message "installed" appeared)
    Exited Game
    Copied Backup prefs.prop
    Got the game running

Edit: I now also found the solution for my problem with the "py" file. The problem only occured when loading the file with IE - I tried it now with firefox and the extension is there - now I can open the file with notepad.

Thank you so much DjNDB and Spawner! I use Win7 64 bit. I used the manual download for ep 4 you showed me AND deleted the temp file before entering the game the first time. It works like a charm. I can leave and reenter the game. All my savegames are intact. Thank you.
  • edited October 2012
Many thanks to DjNDB! Manual method plus temp file deletion also worked perfectly for me, on Win7 x64. I wish Telltale worked as hard as you did to help us. God bless you!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the files. I just got the game yesterday and was pissed that I couldn't download episodes 2-4. I am now in the middle of episode 2 were Mark takes an arrow in the...shoulder:confused: anyways no problems or glitches so far. Thanks again

This worked initially for me, then when I exited the game, Episode 4 disappeared, and says "GET" again. When I try to download it again, I'm back to "Download Connection Lost!". What am I doing wrong!? Help!?

I had the same problem until I deleted the temp file BEFORE entering the game to download episode 4.

I finally got access to the Mac .json files and just updated the Mac files of Episode 2 and 3 to the latest versions as well.

If anyone had problems with the manual downloads of EP2 or EP4 before now on mac, or before this post's time on pc, it's worth another try.

Thanks so much, DjNDB! I tried the manual method and it worked like a charm. But only after several tries, though, due to my own carelessness. I can't stress enough when I say ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR GAMES. I had to reinstall the files for episode 4 and delete temp (before starting and clicking GET in-game) for it to finally work. Bothering with the pref.prop made my game go all kaflooey and didn't help; so I left it alone in my final try.

TellTale needs to provide a patch or a fix for this soon; we shouldn't have to work our way around it to play a game we bought. Not cool!

DjNB you should change the instruction a bit. It seems from this and my own experience that you need to delete the tempfile before entering the game. Thanks again. If only TTG could be this helpful as you!

This worked for me. Thanks DjNDB you are a legend. Which is more than can be said for telltale who have been absolutely appalling through this whole debacle. No response whatsoever on the forums or reply to support emails (3 days waiting so far). Great game, but next time i shall certainly not be purchasing direct from telltale.

I'm finally back up and running, thanks to DjNDB and others who've posted tips. Thanks, all! Of course, I've just started Ep. 2. Can't wait to do this three more times ...

One thing I would point out in case anyone missed it elsewhere (I certainly did the first few times I tried this) is to be patient if it seems like the game is locked up or frozen. I had to sit through at least three different unresponsive states of 2-5 minutes each before I could finally start playing Ep. 2, but when it finally did go through, it worked like a charm.
