  • THE REAPINGS: PART 3

    DISTRICT 3: Sophie

I open my eyes. I see the smile hardened into my mother’s face, and the anxiety reflected in her eyes “Sophie, you need to get up,” My mother says “It’s time for prayer.”

“Okay Mama.” I reply, stretching my muscles as if I was slightly sore after a night of worrisome sleep which is only to be expected on the day I volunteer at this year’s Reaping.

Exactly one hour before the reapings, my parents walk down the elegant stairs with a worried look plastered onto both of their faces. They then lead me down the stairs like a young child, watching my every move intently. When we reach the bottom of the stairs, my mother takes my left arm and my father grips the right.

“Our Father which art in heaven,” My mother says

“Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in Earth as it is in Heaven..” My father responds

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” I say, completing the prayer in a weak wobbly voice.

We then exit the house, and I look behind at the place that has imprisoned me for so long.

I wait in the 15 year old section, watching the roughly set up stage with intensity. It is easily suggested that the Capitol attendants frantically set it up overnight with little time due to the fact that the stage looks unstable and is covered with an assortment of metallic coloured pieces of cloth. There are folding chairs that are covered with electrical wires that spark up every now and then to represent District 3. It’s pretty pathetic if you ask me...

The escort walks onto the stage, determination set into his rich blue eyes, and a sudden still comes over the crowd. He is a new escort, unknown to the citizens of District Three and especially unknown to myself. He looks pretty old, but you can tell that he has been given an enhanced look to look younger due to popular surgeries in the Capitol. I’m guessing the Escort is also a physical representation of District Three. He has grown out and unkempt gold hair and wears a bright yellow suit to probably represent electricity. Again, pathetic.

“It’s time to announce this year’s tributes! Female’s first.” He announces with a sense of authority embedded in his voice.

I fix my eyes on the reaping bowl, scared on what I am about to do and what my parents will think of me... I bite my lip, turning almost every possibility over and over in my mind. I have never felt so tense. The Escort then begins to circle his hands through the bowl trying to build up suspense in the crowd.

The Escort quickly walks back up to the microphone, unfolding the crisp parchment, and reads the name.

“This year’s reaped female tribute is.... ANDREA LIPTON!”He roars into the microphone

“No! Wait!” I yell, walking to the middle of the town center “I volunteer as tribute.”

The whispers ripple through the crowd, like a stone thrown into the polished surface of a crystal clear lake.

    “Sophie... Oh my God.”

    “Who is that?”

“What the hell? Why did she just volunteer?”

The first thought that crosses my mind is, “I am free.”

As everybody is frantically looking at me, I begin to function and regain my composure as I realise that there is no going back from this. I glide unto the stage and glimpse myself in the screens that ordain the buildings next to the stage that allow all the inhabitants to see what is going on. I look confident, I look beautiful, and most importantly, I look unstoppable.

I see the Escort looking at me in complete shock, District 3 rarely has volunteers so I can see why.

    “Your name?” he questions

“Sophie Smith” I reply nervously but with a smug look of confidence.

“Okay then! Sophie Smith everyone!” The Escort announces, the crowd remains silent.

The silence presses on me like a thousand crushing weights, it feels as if this is all a dream... I’m finally free... No more abuse, physically or emotionally. Why haven’t I thought of volunteering sooner?

“Now for the boys!” he says, jumping up and down in to the boy’s glass orb, probably thrilled for this year’s Games considering that we haven’t had a volunteer from District 3 in ages...

“Clint Ford!” His voice echoes across the town square, making half of the crowd jump.

An older male emerges from the 17 year old section he looks completely terrified but he has something about him that seems cold...

As I wait in the Justice building for my final visitors, I start to closely observe my surroundings. I figure it may be a good habit to get into for The Hunger Games. The large, elaborate windows enlighten the room with a bright, pure light. There are two red velvet couches, and a table inlaid with silver and an assortment of gleaming yellow gemstones. The light reflected off of different facets, making the delicate reflections swirl on the cream coloured walls.

A stern Peacekeeper escorts my hysterical mother into the holding room, along with my numb father trailing behind them. The Peacekeeper then leaves the room and waits outside the door.

“Sophie... Why?” my mother sobs, crying into my shoulder as if she was the one that is going into the Games. I pat her back mechanically.

I suddenly realize that I actually don’t really care about my parents. They had imprisoned me, like a princess waiting for a prince that will never come. The anger seethes over me until I can’t handle it anymore. Over my mother’s senseless babble, I release all my frustration.

“Stop!” I cry, hatred pouring into my voice. Listen mother. Listen” She quiets down immediately.

“You’ve never cared about my well-being and you never will!” I shout “You and Father have imprisoned me! Both of you have abused me physically and emotionally!” They both look at me in shock.

“That is the reason why I have volunteered, I’ve had enough of it!” I say, erupting in tears.

“I knew it.” My mother whispers

“What?” I reply, confused "Knew what?"

“We told you to pray little girl! You never really prayed for God’s forgiveness!” My father exclaims

“A Devil never dies, you just have to keep on killing it.” My mother says in a sadistic tone.

“Mama, Pap-“ I stop my words as I feel an extreme sense of pain appear on my shoulder. I fall onto the ground with my mother standing on top of me with a small dagger.

I hear footsteps and I’m guessing my parents hear them too. My mother quickly places me onto the red velvet couch, while my father cuts off a piece of fabric from his shirt to conceal my wound. I feel my tears begin to make their way down my cheeks.

A Peacekeeper barges into the room “Time’s up.”

“Bye Sophie.” They both say, looking anxious.

    “Wait...” I say weakly.

“Is everything alright Sophie?” A Peacekeeper asks me curiously.

    Should Sophie report her parents?

    THE REAPINGS: PART 4

    DISTRICT 3: Clint

I am seated in an open space on the train. Rain whizzes past the windows at a million miles an hour, I'm surprised the rain can stick to something going so fast. The droplets are streaking across the foggy glass like tears. They almost match the ones trailing down my cheek although mine are warmer and painful.

My mind is still reeling from what happened at the reaping. The only thing I've been capable of doing since I boarded the train is stare out the window. But all the scenery is a blur, so I just watch the rain drops gather in pools and slide away. I miss my family so much, I regret declining the offer to see my family, at the moment I thought it would be a good thing not to see them but I guess I was wrong...

"Okay!" The Escort says excitingly "Your Mentor will be here in a few minutes!"

    "Where's Sophie?" I ask

"She's in her room" The Escort says pointing at the door "I wonder why she's even in there, she should be here, eating!"

"I'll go check on her." I say, pulling myself away from the window.

Jesus... A part of me feels like I'm going to wake up any moment, it all feels so surreal. The reality of me coming back are slim. Very slim. Something that I have been telling myself since I got on this train. Suddenly the piercing sound of sobbing interrupts by consuming thoughts. The sobbing noise seems to be coming through Sophie's room. I gently open Sophie's door and see her head glancing at her lap as tears start falling, lightly soaking her dress.

Why is she crying? She volunteered to be here so I don't get why she's sad. Hm...

    [Walk into her room] [Leave]

    DISTRICT 4: Rain

"Ladies and Gentlemen, your female tribute for this year's Annual Hunger Games is..."

"Rain Cavanaugh!" I say to myself in my best Capitol voice. I doubt I'll ever get reaped, my names only been entered twice. I've never been involved in any tesserae what's so ever! It feels good knowing that my chances of being reaped are at an all time low!

It's been a few minutes since The Escort announced this year's female tribute, I'm kind of eager myself to know who's the unlucky one this year to enter the arena. I was too caught up in my thoughts to listen to the name the Escort announced... Ugh, I need to get out of that habit.

"Where are you dear?" The Escort calls out to the crowd

This is getting boring.. Can the girl come out of hiding already? I start to look at the Mayor impatiently until something shocking catches my eye... I see myself projected onto the screen by the stage.

    I'm this year's tribute.

How... How did this happen? No... No.. This can't be true. Please..

"Come on! We're waiting for you!" The Escort roars into her microphone

I begin to walk away from the crowd of 15 year olds and join the Peacekeeper that will escort me to the stage. I'm practically marching to my death right now. I walk up the steps onto the stage, quickly changing my facial expression to a confident smile as I join my Escort on stage.

"What took you so long dear?"

"I... I..." I'm frozen. I try to speak but nothing seems to come out.

"Someone's a bit nervous.." She giggles "Okay, it's time to pick the male tribute!" She began to walk calmly to the boy's ball, promptly diving her hand in, swirling it around for a minute or so, finally pulling out a name.

"This year's male tribute is... LUKE WATERS!" A 15 year old boy began to make his way from the second row of boys towards the stage, he looks scared out of his mind, he didn't really bother putting on a calm and daring face like I did. He stood on the other side of the Escort and bowed his head, I could hear the light sniffles coming from him. To be completely honest, I don't think me and him will last long in the arena..

I silently wave District 4 goodbye one last time until the Escort pulls Luke and I away by our arm towards the Justice Building.

    -- An Hour Later --

The Escort led Luke and I towards the train which was waiting for us at the station. Luke looked white as a sheet and his eyes were all puffy and red. I give him a sympathetic look as we make our way past the crowds of people trying to get a good look at us. I let Luke onto the train first before following him and The Escort climbing on behind us shutting the door.

"Here we are, this is the train that will take us directly to the Capitol. Just take a look at it's magnificence!" She gushed as she guides us in. "Now if you would kindly wait here while I go get Finnick. He should be around here somewhere."

We were soon left alone in the compartment. I turn around and see Luke sitting on one of the blue velvet chairs looking glumly out the window as we started moving. His eyes were filled with sadness and anger. I remember Luke from around the District, he lived in a rich family on the outskirts of District four, he used to live around the poor area of the District until his father got a major job upgrade.. I walk over to Luke and sit across from him, he acts as if I'm not even there.

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask him quietly, leaning towards him "Listen, we're gonna be fine. We can get through this.. You're strong."

"How is it that you're not scared?" He murmurs

"I am... trust me, I thought I was going to pass out once I realised that they called my name." I say in a shy tone of voice.

I immediately hear a swish noise, I turn my head around to see our Mentor standing in the doorway. Hopefully he could provide us with the information we need to win this thing.

"Well, well, well" Our Mentor began walking over to us. "District 4's tributes...hmmm" he eyed us each up and down individually checking us out to see if we we're 'victor material'.

"So let's get your strengths sorted out first.. let's start with you missy" he says, looking at me attentively.

"I'm a quick runner, a quick swimmer, and my weapon of choice are knives.." I say

"Okay, we can work with that." Our Mentor says cheerfully "What about you, Luke?"

"I'm skilled with tridents and fishing traps, I'm sort of a quick runner." He says slowly

"I'm liking what I hear so far!" He says, smiling at both of us.

"Do you guys want to see what you're up against so far?" He asks us "Or... Would you like to watch previous Games where you can try and pick up some strategies?"

"I don't know, what do you suggest?" I question him

"Well, the choice is up to you."
