    THE REAPINGS: PART 7

    DISTRICT 8: Flavia Preston

"But... But what if it is me?" My sister says as tears start streaming down her bright red face.
My sister was always frightened of the games, just like I am. I just got a lot better at hiding it...

"It won't be, I promise you." I say. I feel terrible for saying this as it is a promise I can't keep.

"How is it that you're never scared... I wish I was like you." She whispers as more tears emerge from her crystal blue eyes.

"I'm more than scared Ellie. I just got better at hiding it," I admit, caressing her shoulder "Now go get dressed! Mother has a pretty dress ready for you in her room."

"Yay!" She exclaims and quickly runs to my mother's room while wiping the tears off of her face.

I glance over at her, she's so innocent. It's sad knowing that the Capitol would allow a sweet and innocent girl to be pitted into an arena to fight to the death for their entertainment. You know what I say to that? Fuck them. Fuck the Capitol, Fuck President Snow and fuck everyone that has anything to do with the Games!

"Flavia! Flavia!" My sister calls from the room. "Come here quickly!" I'm guessing she loves the dress that mother made, mother was always good at making things. I wouldn't be surprised if Ellie's dress is better than mine, she was always her favourite.

I quickly slip into the room with a smile plastered onto my face, it's good to know that Ellie is not worrying anymore.

"Oh my... You look beautiful!" I exclaim, a smile arises on mother's face as I compliment the dress

"Mother, where did you find the money to buy the material for this?" I question

"I got my ways." My mother smirks and gives me a wink.

"You stole it didn't you?" I laugh and give her a high five.

"It's almost time..." Ellie says in a low tone of voice, pointing at the rusty clock that stands on the table.

"You're both going to be fine." Mother assures us, her voice rising several octaves as she speaks. "Don't worry too much, both of you were never involved in any sort of tesserae, you're safer than safe - think about it, our neighbour Polly has her name in 78 times."

"She's right Ellie, don't worry too much." I say calmly, tucking her hair behind her ear "It's your first year, they aren't going to pick you."

    --28 minutes later--

I find the sixteen year old section in a close pack around the stage and make my way over, not saying a word to my best friend Lilo as we join the crowd of sixteens. Neither of us are really in the mood for talking at the moment. I scan the sections quickly, unable to find my sister Ellie. After a few minutes of looking, I find the twelve year old section. Ellie is nervously situated among them. She looks like she's going to pass out, hopefully that doesn't happen..

The crowd stills as our Mayor and District 8's escort, Alara Bonus, take their seats on stage. One seat is still empty - the seat of Woof Alocker, the second living victor of the Hunger Games from District 8. As the clock strikes two, it becomes obvious that Woof is not coming. At least not on time. He's probably passed out drunk by this time of day.

The Mayor starts to recap the history of Panem and the rules of the Hunger Games, but I quickly stop paying attention. I've heard it all before. Instead, I turn my gaze onto one of the large glass balls in the center of the stage. Five of those slips have my name on them. One has Ellie's.

My attention is pulled back to the stage as Woof makes his entrance, drunk as ever. There's scattered applause in the square and several short bursts of laughter as he tries to hug Alara, but the majority of us remain silent. As much as the Capitol wants to, they can't force us to be festive.

Alara Bonus, still slightly shaken from Woof's full-frontal assault, takes the podium.

"Happy Hunger Games!" she greets, opening her arms wide as if expecting applause. All of us remain silent. "And may the odds be ever in your favor!" Those words will be etched on her gravestone, no doubt about it.

My eyes find Ellie in the crowd once more, she's still shaking. She's only twelve—her name has only been put in one time. She should realise that her chances of being reaped are slim. My eye then catches a girl next to her, I think her name is Alison. She's twelve years old - her name should only be in there once but I overheard her boasting about her name being in the glass orb twenty five times. Twenty five! Something is wrong with that girl, does she honestly think she can win? She's small, fragile, and weak. I doubt the girl could even lift a knife.

"Ladies first!" I hear our Escort's voice, as if from a distance, ringing in my ear. I watch with bated breath as she reaches into the ball and pulls out a slip of paper. As she walks to the podium, I send one silent prayer out to whichever God might be listening. I suddenly feel a tight grip on my shoulder, it's Lilo. She looks at me worried, I'm guessing she's just as scared as I am.

Please don't be me or Ellie... Please..

    "Flavia Preston!"

I look around to see who will head to the stage before I even comprehend the name. When I do, I do a double take. Flavia Preston? Me? Damn it to hell! Does God have a personal vendetta against me or something?

Lilo's grip on my shoulder loosens and I turn around to see her as white as a sheet. I want to reassure her, but I can't make the words come out of my mouth. I can't do this. Even if I somehow make it to the end, I won't be able to take down the strongest. I'm as good as dead and she knows it.

"I'm sorry, Flavia.." she mutters quickly.

I turn towards the stage and take slow steps forward. The last thing I need right now is to collapse like Woof.

"Flavia!" a hysterical voice cries. It's Ellie. I feel my heart break. The crowd seems to be voicing their displeasure at me being chosen. "Flavia!" The people clear away in front of her.

"No! Please!" She screams, running up to me but is stopped by a Peacekeeper.

"Get the hell off of me!" She yells.

"Listen girl, go back or else." The Peacekeeper says in a sadistic tone.

"Ellie, go back. It's okay.." I say, trying to get her to go back into the crowd of twelves.

"Flavia!" Ellie cries out, opening her arms out.

"Well then." The Peacekeeper whispers. The Peacekeeper then quickly pushes Ellie to the ground with all of his force and takes out a whip. "Please.... please.." She whimpers.

"No!" I cry, and spring forward. It's too late to stop the arm from descending, and I know I won't have the power to block it. I quickly throw myself directly between the whip and Ellie. I fling out my arms to protect her from the whip. I take the full force of it across the cheek. The pain is unbearable and blinding but I manage to get up.

"Get out of my way NOW!" The Peacekeeper demands. "You have five seconds."

    "Five."

"Four!" He exclaims and takes out his gun from his holster and aims it at my head.

    "THREE!"

    What should Flavia do?

    THE REAPINGS: PART 8

    District 8: Flavia Preston

"Hey.. Hey!" Woof walks inand stands in between the Peacekeeper and I "So.. Uh... Are we done here?" He's obviously still drunk.

"She got in my way, she needs to be punished." The Peacekeeper says coldly.

"By shooting a tribute?" Woof says in a smart tone "She's just been reaped, she needs to be ready for interviews, the chariot rides, and the games. What am I supposed to tell her stylist?"

The Peacekeeper then rests the whip and his gun on his hip "She interrupted a punishment."

This Peacekeeper is not your average District 8 Peacekeeper.. He seems... different. Everything about him, his commanding voice, his odd accent, it's like warning me how dangerous he could be. Where has he come from? District 2? District 4? Or from the Capitol itself?

"We can... Work something out here." Woof suggests

"Yeah, I got something." The Peacekeeper stands out "We could put that girl's name in 10 more times as punishment." He says, pointing at Ellie.

"Sure. That sounds reasonable.." Woof says

    "Please.." Ellie whimpers

"What? No! She's only twelve!" I exclaim "She was just scared! Please, you can't do this!"

"That's not my problem." The Peacekeeper says angrily "Does it look like I give two shits about you or her? Both of you are dirt."

    "I'm sorry Flavia." Woof says

"Sorry? You're sorry?" I get up, pushing Woof away "You're fucking crazy!"

"Oh my! Manners young lady!" The Escort roars into her microphone

"Well, it's a deal then." The Peacekeeper says, picking up Ellie off of her feet back into the twelve year old section. Ellie doesn't fight back, its like she used all of her energy.

I give one last smile to Ellie as she's being taken away and give a wave of goodbye.

I take my place on stage, right next to our Escort "That was truly heart warming." She says "Lets give a big round of applause to this year's tribute Flavia Preston!"

The whole crowd is silent, the silence almost seems to kill me.
And then, slowly, like a wave across the crowd, people begin showing their respect. The gesture for admiration in District 8 sweeps across the multitude. I've only seen this gesture in funerals and I'm not ready to say goodbye to Ellie or my mother yet.

"It is now time to choose our boy tribute! Eek! So exciting!" She says. Oh how I would love to stick a knife into this Escort's head. I've never hated the Capitol so much.

    "Gustav Lepson!"

Gustav Lepson? That last name sounds familiar... then I remember. That's Lilo's brother!

I snap back to life at the sound of Lilo's hysterical screaming. I glance over to see her holding tightly to the back of Gustav's shirt. Their father makes his way over and quickly removes Lilo from Gustav. Lifting Lilo into his arms, he says a quick word to Gustav before helping him onto the stage.

"Was that your sister?" The Escort chuckles "I'm guessing your father didn't want her to steal all the glory!"

"Uhh..." He tries to speak but no words seem to come out.

"Someone's a bit nervous!" She giggles at him "Let's have a big applause for this year's tributes!"

"It's time to go." A Peacekeeper emerges out from the crowd and violently tugs Gustav and I's arm.

"Don't I get to say goodbye?" I ask

"What are you doing? We have to say our goodbyes!" Gustav says

"We're a bit... Behind schedule." A Peacekeeper says as an evil smirk arises on his face. It's as if he's getting joy from us not being able to say goodbye. This might be the last time I ever get to see Ellie and my mother. If I go against the Peacekeepers orders again, Ellie could get into worse trouble, even my mother. The Gamemakers could also easily kill me off as punishment if I go against their bullshit of a system. Is it worth the risk?

    What should Flavia do?

[Escape the Peacekeeper's grip and quickly say goodbye to your mother and Ellie through the Escort's microphone] [Forget it]

    DISTRICT 9: Pedro Boston

    "Sofia Tuttle!"

I take a step towards the stage. To do what, I don't know. Surprisingly, someone holds me back and I look around to find my brother clutching my arm tightly. He gently shakes his head.

God, I must be the most obvious person in the world if my brother knows I'm in love with her. He's normally so oblivious.

I hear Sofia introduce herself, her face is like stone, she has no emotion whatsoever.

"Are you excited to finally get out of such a bad district?" The Escort laughs. I've never wanted to ring someone's neck more in my life. "Come on, everybody! Let's give a big round of applause to our newest tribute!" The whole crowd starts to look at the Escort in disgust because of her comment about our District. District 9 isn't all that bad!

Should I go see her after the Reaping? To say good-bye? She'd probably think I was insane. But then again, I don't really care.

My eyes are pulled away from Sofia as Troy, the mentor falls right off of the stage. Although I know it's not funny at all, I have to withhold my laughter. It's a nervous habit, I think.

"It's time to choose our boy tribute!" I hear the Escort intone. The Escort walks back to the podium slowly. I wish that the name is not my brother.

    "Pedro Boston!"

This might be my chance where I can finally be able to protect Sofia. I have to do this. I can't act weak. Not now. The only comfort I can take now is that maybe I can get to know Sofia a little better before we die. Or before I die. I think she's strong enough to win this thing if she really wants to. I mean... she did take down a couple of bullies at school all by her own.

I take my place on stage, right next to Sofia and tune the rest of the ceremony—the Treaty of Treason—out. It doesn't matter; nothing matters anymore. If I'm going to die in these games, I'd want to die protecting someone I love; and that is Sofia. I scan the crowd and find my brother and my mother. They're both crying, I refuse to look at them because this might trigger myself to cry. I have to do something that makes Sofia and I look like we shouldn't be counted out in these games.

    What should Pedro do?

[Grab Sofia's hand and say you'll both bring pride to this District] [Kiss her on the cheek and appear as lovers] [Give an evil smirk to the cameras] [Do nothing]

  • [Forget it] Its not worth the risk. She could die if she doesn't agree with the Capitols 'system' and fuck that peacekeeper how dare he do that to Ellie! I can't believe Woof allowed that.

[Kiss her on the cheek and appear as lovers] The Capitol loves when love is involved in the games, this can win them tons of sponsors

    CHARIOT RIDES: PART 1

    DISTRICT 10: Mina

    "I look like an idiot."

"This is nothing compared to what I have planned for you."

    Great.

The stylist reaches her hand towards to me, but I pull it away, not letting her touch me. I shoot her a glare of disgust, and she utters something to herself, returning to her clipboard. Crossing my arms over my chest, I leap up onto the table, keeping my legs straight and my body motionless. I want her to know that I don't want to be here.

I'm sure Travis, my friend back at home would enjoy this though. He'd probably be laughing his small ass off. Even though he kept dragging me into a lot of his shit, I miss him. I miss going to the farms with him, stealing those small guns from Peacekeepers, and hiding out late at night. You could probably say that me and him were the troublemakers of District 10.

Puffing my chest out, I snicker, rolling my eyes, trying to give my stylist the hint of me not wanting to be here. I don't deserve to be the Capitol's puppet. I didn't get to say my goodbyes to my father, it sucks having family held up in prison.

"Would you rather go to prison and rot away or go into the arena and be killed?" I ask my stylist

"Well, Mina," the stylist says, looking up from her clipboard. She brings her finger to her chin, genuinely thinking about the question. I think I like her more than I originally thought. "When and how would I die in the arena?"

I shrug, thinking up a Games in my mind with the stylist as tribute. "Day Three with only thirteen tributes left. You would be killed by the girl from Two. Knife through the shoulder, then a sword through the stomach."

"More importantly," she adds, looking at me with a smirk on her face. "What would I be wearing when I die?"

"All black, with brown combat boots."

"I'd rather go to prison, then. I'd rather wear neon orange and white stripes than black and combats!" She says with a disgusted look on her face.

    "Well, okay then." I say

"What about you, Mina?" The stylist asks as she's taking down notes onto her clipboard.

The question stumps me at first, since when I think about it, I don't really know much about the prisons in District Ten. My father from time-to-time mentioned things about it, like the detainees and how they act there. A lot of them lose their mind, he said. It never really sounded too pleasant. Are the Hunger Games more pleasant, though? Is the idea of twenty four kids fighting to the death more appealing?

"I'd have to say... The arena." I answer, getting a questioning expression on her face from my stylist. "In prison, you're stuck in there for life. At least you'd be able to get out of the games, you know?"

"You're good at making points." She says with an impressed expression fixed on her face. "That might come handy in the interviews."

"Thanks." I say, with a small smile on my face.

The stylist walks over to a locker in the corner of the room, inserts a key in the lock, and lifts the handle up. The door opens, and the stylist reaches in, taking out an outfit with a cover over it. She gestures for me to stand up, and as I do, I feel relieved that I'll be getting out of this. Hopefully my outfit isn't that bad.

When she takes off the cover, I don't quite understand what it's supposed to be. Until it hits me, it's white fur of a sheep in form of a coat. Parts of the coat are covered in small amounts of gold Capitol like - glitter.

"This is for you," She says "What do you think?"

"It's... nice." I say in a tone that makes it sound like I don't really like it, but truthfully I kind of do.

"Don't worry, your District partner Colt is wearing the same thing." She says.

"Well, you better get dressed then!" She says excitingly "The Chariot rides are in a few minutes, and I don't want us to be late!"

    --37 minutes later--

    DISTRICT 2: Lachlan

"The both of you look glamorous! Ah! Let me give both of you a kiss. Mwah! Mwah!" The stylist squeaks in his Capitol accent. Jesus, his voice is just so high it makes me want to stab myself several times. "Okay, now remember to smile and wave! The Capitol will love you!"

I look down at my outfit, I'm dressed in silver plates that cover my chest along with a silver which has the number 2 carved in. We look like soldiers. Golden, shimmering, stone dust puffs and sparkles surround our chariot. Personally, I don't like what our stylist has dressed us in. Vivienne seems to like it though since it makes her stand out, she loves attention. Suddenly, all I could focus on was on my feet; sandals with wings on the sides just like a God. They were amazing. The shoes were the only thing I liked about the outfit.

"You could at least try to look happy, Lachlan," Vivienne says, attempting to bring her hand up to fix a piece of hair. "I wouldn't want them all to be mesmerized by just me." I can't tell if she's joking or not.

"Lachlan, it's an honour to be here and you should start realising that," She whispers "If you're gonna keep acting like this, expect to be the first one dead in the arena, you're not gonna take me down with you."

"I'm not bringing you down." I say while brushing off the dust on my armour.

"Good," Vivienne says, rolling her shoulders back, fixing her helmet. "It feels like you've lost your touch, what happened to the boy in the training centre back home?"

"He's still here." I say, fixing my posture.

"That's good." She laughs "It's our time to shine."

The large doors slide open, and once I see the crowd, it's exactly what I thought it would look like. The crowds of people, dressed in all different colors. Their weird hairstyles, their accessories.

CAPITOL. TV: CAESAR FLICKERMAN & CLAUDIUS TEMPLESMITH

Caesar: Over one hundred thousand people! Craning, to get a glimpse of this year's tributes, and the sponsors get to see the tributes for the first time. The importance of this moment cannot be overstated!

Claudius: Here they come! Here they come!

Caesar: There they are, this year's tributes! Haha! It just gives you goosebumps.

Claudius: There's District One! The luxury district, my favourites! The female tribute has some beautiful coloured feathers fanning out around her, which blow in the wind. The male has a black and see-through shirt. His pants are also black and his boots are long lace-up ones. On his back is a pink cape with sprinkles of jewels tied to his neck, which is flapping behind him. His hair has white streaks and is scrunched up messily, both of them look sexy and desirable! They both wave invitely to the crowd. The crowd loves them!

Caesar: And here comes District two! Woo! The both of them are dressed in shining silver plates which cover their chests and helmets that are clipped on their heads. They look just like the soldiers you see in those Roman movies, it gives me chills because they look just so menacing and strong! The boy and girl have such good posture, sponsors definitely have their eyes on them now.

Caesar: District three is in the house! The female surprised us at the Reapings, and now she's surprising us at the chariot rides! Seriously, how many tricks does this district have up their sleeve? She looks gorgeous and so does her District partner! The male and female are covered in some sort of silver fabric that meets at knee length. And that's not all! It even lights up the Capitol's emblem in the middle of the fabric! I don't know about you, but I am impressed!

Claudius: Don't you just love how the stylists so clearly are able to reflect the character of each District? Now heres District four. Aha. Fishing District. The boy gives a wink out to the crowd and his smile is magnifying. His flirtatious acts cause the audience to roar. He only wears blue pants and a coral headpiece. The girl is almost like a mermaid with a seashell two-piece, sandals and a pearl crown. They are both waving enthusiastically, this causes the crowd to roar louder and louder. They surely have gotten the crowds attention now!

Caesar: The District five tributes are the next in line. The male has his short dark brown hair in spikes with sparks flying off every now and then. The female's knee length dress is buzzing and spinning around on her. It's covered in white sequins. They both have a good posture and they're waving to the crowd with a big smile!

Claudius: The transportation District is up next. The two tributes have skin coloured morph suits, making them look naked. At their torsos is a screen which shows trains, bikes, cars and other transportation devices moving. Around their ears are mini planes circling them, making them look dazed. Things take a turn after the boy almost trips out of the chariot. The majority of the crowd start to laugh at them. Looks like things aren't going as well for this year's District six tributes.

Claudius: The District seven tributes are making their way! The female is dressed in a strapless dress with sticks and vines, along with a halo on her head, she looks like the nature goddess. The male wears a jacket that does a good job on matching his piercing hazel eyes. The both of them don't even give an eye to the crowd, instead they just look ahead, it's as if the crowd and the event has sunk beneath them. They look fierce! I love it. I'm guessing the audience won't be forgetting these tributes anytime soon!

Caesar: And behind them we have District eight. The male tribute wears a suit with patchwork fabrics all over. His blonde hair is curled into ringlets and his eyes are constantly moving. Someone's looking a bit nervous! The female wears the same thing but in a dress, with heels.

Claudius: Look! It's District nine! Wow, that colour is quite fascinating to the eye ahaha. District nine has really out done themselves this year! The male is wearing a speckled golden jacket with bright yellow jeans. The female is wearing a dress that has wheats coming out of every corner. Her fishtailed hair is fabulous! Oh, wait! Can you see that? They're holding hands! Sponsors are sure going to pay attention to them right now.

Caesar: And now, we have the tributes from ten. The boy is petrified and looks like he's going to pass out. He manages a fake smile, trying to hide his fear. He wears the same white fur coat that falls to the floor of the chariot as his District partner, it's nice but they're both too nervous.

Caesar: Ten districts down, two to go! District eleven is in! The male is dressed in a black and white suit with berries hovering above his head. I can smell the sweet smell of fruit from here and I can tell everyone else can too, judging from the 'oohs' and 'ahhs'. The female is wrapped up in vines hiding a simple green dress. On the vine flowers bloom and come to life as she smiles and waves. They both look so cute and innocent I just want to hug them!

Claudius: Here comes District twelve! They're both dressed up as coal miners which isn't that interesting. Both of the tributes seem to be trying desperately to get the attention of the crowd but they're being ignored. How sad!
