    Satina Morello: District 1

There was the faint anxiety that reeked through district one. The one that tells you the games are here. At two o’clock today, thousands of us would pile into our districts square and one of us would be reaped. The odds were certainly in my favor of not being reaped. My family and I never needed the tesserae, not that I would mind being reaped. Seeing the Capitol up close, having a stylist, being one of the stars of the 58th hunger games. It’s just that small chance of dying wasn’t on my to do list.

This. This is what I think to myself while I stand in line with the other seventeen year olds, the space gets tighter, more claustrophobic as more people begin to arrive. Late comers have to sit back in adjacent streets and watch from the screen as it is televised live. Here, the people in district one treated it like a festivity. The boys wore there best suits, and girls wore there fanciest dresses. I was no exception, my mother gave me her dress she wore to her reapings, the one she meet my father in. It was a flowing light pink dress that cascaded past my knees. Rather nice.

There’s eleven seats on stage. One for our mayor, one for our new escort, a woman with oddly long golden eyelashes to match her suit, as well as some shade of purple as hair that was likely a wig. The other nine being those of living past victors.

“Welcome, welcome.” Our bubbly new escort chirps into the mic in her Capitol accent. The crowd goes roaring in a contagious excitement that’s got me cheering as well.

“The time has come to select one courageous young man and woman for the honor of representing district one in the 58th hunger games!”

“As always, ladies first.” The dress she wears makes it look like she’s gliding towards the reaping bowl. She digs deep into the bowl, stirring it up with her hand before finally selecting one.

Our escort makes her way back to the mic, unraveling the slip of paper, with her long, golden nails. Gold seemed to be a theme for district one, the luxury district. And then she reads the name.

    “Satina Morello.”

My heart drops for an instant. All I can think about is that the Capitol is viewing this right now, I was on camera for all Panem to see, they’d begin judging me before I have even done anything. My small, quick strides lengthen up as I fix my posture and smile and wave around to the faces in the crowd.

“My, my, you’re a pretty one.” Our escort plays with me. I do my best to give off my most genuine laugh. Blonde curls, porcelain skin, I looked similar to the female victors before me. That boosts my confidence some.

“Are there any volunteers?” She spoke crisply into the mic, waiting a good five to ten seconds before continuing. “Very well! Our female tribute, Satina Morello!” The crowd goes into a frenzy of excitement.

“On to the gentleman.” She moves to the males bowl. “Silve-“

“I volunteer!” A younger voice from the audience gasp.

But this was no regular 'I volunteer!' from your typical, muscular eighteen year old boy who's been training for the games half his life.

“Splendid!” The escort claps her hands in giddy. Finally some excitement, she must be thinking.

The first thing I see from the boys direction is his hair, it’s scraggily and unkempt. Then he shows his face, hideously covered in scars. Most people in district one put a great deal of effort into there outfits, but I suppose there’s always outliers like him. He was in the fifteen years old section but he’s rather tall. I notice this when he stands upright to me.

“Your name sir.” The escort smiles her bright white grin, but I can see through that fake smile is a look of disgust, like she hopes him breathing on the mic doesn’t contaminate it. I think she might’ve caught me smirking at this, even if it was for an instance.

“I’m Tiger Ross.” He smiles and waves at the camera, it’s shocking to me but he looks like he’s in no distress. He starts giggling at everything our escort says to him. Dear god, he’s going to make district one the laughing stock of the games! Normally this punishment would be handed down to some place like twelve or eleven, not a career district. I can alread hear them laughing in the arena now. Why of all people did he have to volunteer?

“Our tributes, Satina Morello and Tiger Ross." She cheers, the audience goes bananas for it. "And a happy hunger games! From district one!”

“Alright you two, shake hands.” Our escort says, giving me a quick glare, probably from that smirk I pulled. Ugh, his hand reeks. If I shake his hand, nobody may take me seriously this games, and I really do not want to die. But I’ve never met this guy before. He could be great with weapons, and if I don’t I’ll break an alliance before it even begins.

    [Shake Tiger's hand] [Back away]

  • Great first part! I'm very hyped for this.

    [Shake Tiger's hand]

I thought about sabotaging the career team here, but then I thought about it... Technically Satina is not a career, since she has been reaped instead of volunteering, right? Guess I might be able to give her a chance.

Hi guys, so there's a change of plans. Part two will be delayed because I have to go somewhere (it's something stupid) but part two will still come out today, or tomorrow depending on your time zone. Also if I skip a districts reaping it'll be recapped by another tribute. I find it's better this way so I can fit in the chariot rides and it's less repetitive.

    John Lottmann: District 4

The ocean view my window looked out of is a sore sight for eyes. Clouds began to roll in with the currents. It was like nature knew that today was the reapings, telling us that there will be death.

The little voice inside my head tells me not to get out of bed, but the other voice inside my head tells me to not worry about it. We are careers after all, we have one of the largest pool of victors in all of Panem, not as large as district two, but the people there are almost as crazy as the Capitol. Finding great glory in each of their wins.

I decide to get out of bed despite that voice. I strip off my clothes and head into the shower, washing off the grease in my hair before the timer automatically cuts it off at five minutes due to rations.

When I get out of the shower, I change into my reaping clothes. A blue collared shirt paired with khakis. I look in the mirror and take a deep breath. If they pick me I’ll win, I know I can. I’m smart, I’m strong, I had a chance. But no way I’m volunteering, no way in hell, I had no siblings, I wouldn’t ever have to worry about that luckily, but I have had friends at school who have lost older, even little brothers or sisters.

    2:00 P.M

The docks were a nice place, when they weren’t filled with thousands of kids waiting to get reaped. By the time I get there, our escort, a man in a sea blue suit with obvious plastic surgery is swirling his fingers around, looking for just the right name.

    “Emily Finch!”

A girl emerges after several moments of the cameras searching for her, and she’s in the fifteen year old section.

You would think being from a career district that someone would volunteer, each time I hear a murmur in the audience I think someone’s about to come dashing through the crowds and volunteer. A high pitch, cry comes out and it’s not from Emily Finch.

A woman is standing aside from the children, holding an infant in her arms. The hysterical cries come from her. “No, Emily! Don’t go!” She nearly jumps the into the crowd before two peacekeepers have to drag her and her baby out. I connect the dots. That must be her mother,

The girl stays relatively quiet as she walks, trying to her hair is in eloquent dirty blonde braids that form a bun and a sleeveless blouse with a flowing white skirt with ruffles. Our escort greets her as she mounts the stage.

“I suppose that was your mother wasn’t it?” The man puts the mic up to her face, her sea green eyes are fixed on some point in the distance, shiny and just barely pushing out the tears. She says nothing, instead rubbing her hand over her throat.

Our district’s mentor, Mags, a sixty something year who won in the early days of the games has the decency to comfort Emily, using her own body to shield her from the cameras.

“Are there any volunteers?” The escort says merely out of formality, if someone was going to volunteer, they’d do it the second her name got called.

The escort lets out a sigh as he moves on to the boys pool. Just like the girls he twirls his hand in the bowl, pulls out the slip of the paper, crosses back to the podium and speaks in a clear voice.

It hits me. First softly, then it’s like a punch in the face, how was this possible? Out of the thousands of names, my name was only in there four times. The minimum for a sixteen year old.

The voices reappear back in my head as I step up to the podium. The ones who dash up to say they’ll volunteer like the career districts typically do. They’re even crueler the second time around.

“Yes.” I say without missing a beat, like I’ve been rehearsing this for the past four years, which I have. “It is an honor to represent my district in this years hunger games.”

Our escort restates if anyone is still willing to volunteer. It’s dead silent. I can’t remember once in ten years where not even one tribute volunteered.

The mayor, is beginning to read the long, dull treaty of treason that they must read every year. I’m not paying attention anymore to his voice, instead sizing up Emily. We could be mistaken as siblings or cousins, sea green eyes, tan skin. Typical upper class district four signs, but her outfit suggest otherwise. She’s actually very attractive. But I could easily take her out when it comes down to it.

Our mayor concludes the treaty of treason and motions Emily and I to shake his hand. His eyes are a solid, friendly brown and his hands are cold like the oceans winter.

I stretch out my hand for Emily to shake. She gives a tense, strong squeeze for such a small girl. I notice her hand ball up to fist when they fall back down. She was scared, and who could blame her.

When the anthem ends we’re directed to the justice hall. We’re given five minutes to say goodbye to family and friends if you have them.

My mother comes in first, my father following in close behind. They gather around knowing not to cry because just about anything could set me off this moment. We spend the first few moments embracing each other, saying nothing.

“You can win.” My dad whispers. “Show them what you got and don’t take any risk.” He says bluntly, not quite what to sure these last few moments we might have together.

“I know I can win. I will win.” I tell both of them. Just before the peace keepers come in and drag them away.

There’s a bright flashes of lights from the media. They’re going crazy for film and pictures of there newest tributes. Mags guides us into the train, neither I or Emily smile. Mags is a woman of few words, I realize. The doors close behind the train. And when they close, Emily finally seeps down to the floor, bawling her eyes out.

Mags knows better then to talk to her right now, knowing she most likely wanted to be left alone. I follow her to the dining cart. Where there’s leather chairs from ten, velvet drapes from one, and food able to feed an entire family for a week.

Mags sits down in her seat, I follow quick behind. She gives me a smile, a genuine one too. I think I might like her as a person but I don’t know how useful she’ll be as a mentor.

“I know how it feels.” Mags tells me. “It’s okay to be sad, or angry. I can still remember I was. I had nobody to help me back then either.”

“We should go over how you’re going to survive these games.” Mags tells me. I can still hear Emily in the other cart, hysterical. She’s scared, she’s angry. She needs someone right now.
