    Once.
He just needs to take off the coat he's wearing and look at the tag. His coat must have a tag on it, because it's in the store ;)

Either that or it's all about the math, which I have no intention to do right now.

Absolutely correct! I thought of that at work yesterday. I work in apparel.

Ok, same question with Max! (let's say that was sometime between Hit the Road and Season One, k? Just to make sure he has a brain.)

    Zero, he wouldn't want one.

Ok, a slightly more mathy attempt...
Assuming that the sizing system is uncomplicated, i.e. each size is strictly larger than the previous one and smaller than the next one, Max would be able to perform a binary search of the 2000 sizes. He'd find the correct size in no more than ⌈log₂ 2000⌉ = 11 attempts. (He has to take a coat off no more than 10 times)

11 times. he has to take it off to buy it.

also, i doubt max even knows what a binary search is.

    Is that even possible?!

I wouldn't know what a binary search is if I hadn't learned it at uni.

Actually, there are a lot of things I probably wouldn't know if I hadn't learned them at uni - like why tequila shots are a bad idea, and the importance of keeping an eye on your clothes when you go skinnydipping.

So... are you suggesting that Max somehow doesn't have a university degree? I'm shocked! :p

He could do, it's just I don't think they teach search algorithms in the "Firearms and Psychological Torture" major.

Yeah they do I major in that class. we dont have a teacher though since one kid accedently fired his gun at the wrong time but we are pulling through just fine.

The question was the minimum amount of time, and I say it's zero. Max doesn't need to take his own coat off since he doesn't wear one, and the first one he tries might be the right one. Meaning he'd find a coat that fits without taking any coat off.

The question was "to find one that fits", not "to buy it". I have no reason to believe Max would actually buy the coat anyways. Methinks he'd just leave with it on.

There are four children of all different heights and ages.
The second oldest is the tallest.
    Jane is taller than Joe.
    Anne is shorter than Bob.
    Joe is older than Anne.
    Joe is not the oldest.
    Anne is not the shortest.
    Bob is not the tallest.

1)The second oldest is the tallest.
    2)Jane is taller than Joe.
    3)Anne is shorter than Bob.
    4)Joe is older than Anne.
    5)Joe is not the oldest.
    6)Anne is not the shortest.
    7)Bob is not the youngest.
8)From 2&3: Shortest is Anne or Joe, Tallest is Jane or Bob
9)From 4&5: Oldest is Jane or Bob
    10)From 6&8: Shortest is Joe
11)From 5&8: Joe is not second oldest
12)From 4: Joe is not youngest
13)From 5,11&12: Joe is second youngest
    14)From 4&13: Anne is youngest
Nothing else can be determined, so the following 3 answers are possible:

    Height:
    Joe Anne Bob Jane
    Age:
    Anne Joe Jane Bob

    Height:
    Joe Anne Jane Bob
    Age:
    Anne Joe Bob Jane

    Height:
    Joe Jane Anne Bob
    Age:
    Anne Joe Bob Jane

Edit: The question has changed to say Bob is not the tallest. Thus the top of those answers is the only correct one :)

There once was a man with hands very teeny.
On top of his head was a bright purple beanie.

Sure, let me give this a try.
A door is a movable (but not removable in typical use) object meant to block a hole through which you can access a room or container.

I don't know if puzzles like this really belong here, but it's a fun one nonetheless, and not too hard if you think in the right direction. This particular one was made by somebody else on another forum I frequent. Here it is:

Maybe 'riddle' is a misleading word. 'Puzzle' would be better.
And you guys are thinking entirely in the wrong direction. :)
  • edited June 2010
I have no clue what you're going for, so I'll make my comments:
That safe looks like you need to be left handed or something. Of course, maybe you need to use your right hand to turn the thingie. But the thingie has no number or letters or markings on it. And then there is a key. In the middle. I hope you're not supposed to unlock it all at the same time.
Also, seems to me having the hinges on the outside is pretty stupid.

Mmh, here you go for the stuff I notice from the picture. Not sure if I'm going in the right direction or not.
