I think its because it had a slightly more rewarding cliffhanger like in A house divided. Most season 2 endings just had utterly unsatisfying endings. I was also paced better to me.
Though again I would have appreciated it being longer, especially given its only 3 episodes
It'd odd, I'm normally a stickler for length, but this didn't bother me so much. A couple more hubs would have been nice but the episode (and series it seems) was quite fast paced and intense so they may have felt out of place.
In all honesty I hated it. I didn't want to hate it, and I really was excited for it. I really liked The idea and I was excited to play it b… moreut I've played it and it felt like Season Two. There were a few awesome moments, especially the introduction sequence but overall it was disappointing. I will say though I love the voice acting and the combat sequences were pretty cool, but the story was all over the place, the writing wasn't anything special, and it was just a very saddening to see how boring and how much of a let down it was for me. I rate it 5/10. but that's just my opinion.
Edit: I forgot to say the graphics in this episode were fantastic and the animations for the characters were amazing as well, so I guess that's one thing that got right, along with a few other great things.
I know this ain't exactly the thread for it, but I just noticed that Jay Bonansinga was listed as a story consultant in the credits. If you … moredon't know who that is, he's the author of TWD novel series (Rise of the Governor, Road to Woodbury, etc)
It might also be worth noting that S2 didn't have a story consultant, but S1 did (Gary Whitta). Maybe that can help ease some peoples' minds about the writing/story telling, although if this episode is any indication to me personally, I don't think there's much to worry about to begin with, the story and writing seem in good hands right now.
I'd give the first episode somewhere between an 8.0-8.5. It was good, the voice acting was great, it sets up an interesting story, and the characters are good so far (Randall seems like an interesting antagonist), but it felt a little short and some of the choices were pretty easy. Overall, it was a good start to the series.
Not exactly. It was fairly boring, the characters were unlikable, the PTSD thing is not explained nor does it matter currently in the story, the decisions are ridiculous AND choices still don't matter. As for the story, it just feels bland and uninteresting at almost every turn.
If you make Michonne a boring character, you have fucked up. But otherwise, the action sequences are well done, the acting is crisp ans sounds good, the character animations look great and the graphics have improved greatly, but sadly I just didn't enjoy playing it.
9/10! Telltale has upped their game, and have clearly learnt from their more recent installments. Definitely more solid, fluid gameplay. Good likeable characters and interesting baddies. Definitely more morally gray people which definitely shakes things up from TWD's more black and white villains. Good pacing. I felt the dialogue was missing some of it's awkwardness and weird writing from the first 2 seasons, which is awesome. And the narrative took twists and turns; not really predictable, which is always fun. Choices didn't reaaally matter, but that's not new lol. Still something Telltale has to work towards I guess. I honestly wasn't really expecting much from this, I kind of deliberately didn't hype myself up in case it flopped, but it was great! Forgot how much I missed this depressing world, haha. Pick it up guys, it's worth it.
i'd say 3.75/5
I think there should've been more going on before they answered the radio call, just to better establish where Michonne is. And the time where you get caught with the boy and girl was done, I think, fairly sloppily.
My main gripe is that it should've been maybe half an hour longer. I guess it did the job right if it left me wanting more, though.
I hope no one minds if I just go and copy and paste the spoiler-free review I gave it on tumblr:
So how does it feel playing an establ… moreished character from the comic book series?
Turns out, not too bad.
Playing a character like Michonne is an interesting dynamic for a Telltale game. I found myself more often than not choosing silent options because I felt many talking options were unnatural for Michonne. It worked very well. Silence blended into conversation much better than previous titles, so really, “Silence is a valid option”.
Graphics: The animation was too good for it’s own good. What I mean is, the animation and resolution of the character models have surpassed the engine they were built on. Often times fluid animation was stilted because the game couldn’t seem to take it, but maybe it was just my machine. It's about half of what an Episode of a full series would be I think. Probably releasing it so they have people playing things for the next few months.
IT WAS TOO SHORT, WHY DON'T THEY JUST RELEASE THE WHOLE THING AT ONCE???
It is just a mini series, but if that was the start of S3 then I'd be very disappointed.
I don't trust Sam, I actually believe Norma's warning about her... a master lier and deceiver... and whats the first thing her brother did when he came up and was asked to tell the truth?..he lied..

But you can 'scratch' (rub) your head over it
I did like some characters and the choices seemed okay for me. As for the story, it didn't have me hooked in the first minutes but later, it certainly did. And damn, that fucking intro sequence, though. I really loved it. And the animations were so damn great. I hope that every episode will have an intro sequence from now on. I'm really excited to what's gonna happen in later episodes.
Shane surely love to rub his head a lot, lol.
Can't wait to see how Jon Bernthal plays the Punisher in Daredevil. Haven't watched the recent trailer yet.

8/10 for me. It was a very nice little story, an appetizer before S3. Didn't really have a problem at all with the game. Michonne is awsome, but has some baggage. The story was the beginning of a dark yet interesting story. The graphics and animation were superb for TT games. My complaints would be that it's so freaking short and I wanted to get to know the side characters more. Plus I expected a more unique soundtrack. S2 stuff is good, but I wanted more cause I'm selfish like that.
You're right, it didn't, but it did have dedicated season leads, as well as additional writing and design credits from Gearbox themselves. So it accomplishes the same thing as having a consultant, more or less.
Well wouldn't Nick Breckon be considered a dedicated season lead for Season 2? He wrote 3 of the 5 episodes and had additional writing credits on the remaining two.

My major grief with this game is I have no real reason to care about anyone other than Michonne. The characters seems very weak in substance and I never hesitated making most decisions. I liked the boat premise but that seems to not be important in the overall plot of this game... so, whatever. Some cool stuff but nothing substantial.
Well, of course. I didn't like Game of Thrones Episode 1 very much, but I still wanted to give the rest of the series a fair chance. I'm just worried that this will turn out like Season 2.
I rate it 6,5/10.
Game was too short for my taste. The gamepace made it seem even shorter than it was.
I wish they would have used a slower pace for the first half of the game. I had loved to have some more talks with the crew and get more insight on those characters. Also the dialogue options when you spot Sam on the ferry and the outcome bothered me.
The game also didnt make me care about most characters. Actually for none beside Michonne and a little for Pete.
On the other hand i liked Michonnes voice acting alot; sound and scenery were awesome too. I am fine with the graphics (beside bodyparts clipping through others) and the zombie look nice. The fighting parts were well done as well.
Story is ok so far even if it reminds me of the s2 situation. But given that there are only 2 episodes left and they are this short makes me sceptic.
Anyway... i think most of my negative points boil down to the episode beeing so short.
Probably a 6.5/10. The episode was short and the story didn't quite work for me because I had no attachment to any character. I did like the opening, the updated graphics and animations, the music and Michonne herself.
I agree. My knowledge of the fact that Michonne and other comic characters will survive the events of the game makes me feel less worried about their safety. The only one I feel worried about is Sam who isn't tied to the comic storyline.
6/10 - an interesting but problematic episode.

That's all fair but I still am very suspicious of Sam. I don't think Norma was completely lying about the girl and she has brought nothing but trouble.

I... yeah, this. They were a lot more effective in other games at making you care about characters more rapidly. Here, we aren't given a reason to care about Sam, Greg, or anyone in Norma's camp.
Though I do like how they were pretty effective at keeping it ambiguous about who did what with Norma, the ferry, and Sam. I liked that - us having to act without fully knowing what was going on. That was very effective but would have worked better if they spent a little more time getting us involved with these characters.

Interesting characters, interesting setting, cool action sequences, smoother animation, that awesome intro, good voice acting (As per usual), and I am excited for the future episodes.
However, as usual there were some slight stuttering (rare) and the loading screens took a while to load. The episode was also too short for my liking (Hopefully this doesn't mean future episodes will be like this) and I wish there were more hub areas and more stuff to interact with.

8/10 - Good plot point to start on. I enjoyed being back in a walking dead world.
Started slow, picked up pace. This episode I felt was to bring / ease you into this michonne game, now we know these characters it should pick up.
So what did you hate specifically about the story? Because you seem positive about everything else
I don't recall TWAU or TFTBL having story consultants either.

Ah shit, I forgot... I'm real sorry.. Thanks to the mod who tagged that post. My bad...

I don't either, I hope the rest of the episodes keep this morally dubious which group is better

"You hit 'em and they get back up, I hit them and they STAY DOWN!"
Mate it's SICK. I'm so excited for that!!
Do you think you'll play episode 2 though?

8/10 Which is pretty weak considering I rate other Walking Dead episodes either a 9 or a 10

All Telltale episodes take up to 2 hours, ShaneWalsh.
Oh btw that intro, they animators totally don't watch True Detective do they

Touche.
8 is not weak.
It doesnt sound like you hated it. It sounds like you didnt love everything about it but hate seems a bit strong.

Sorry for the wall of text
Yeah, I guess hate is a bit of a strong word. I think it was the absolute disappointment that put me in that kind of state of mind.
Exactly, 90 minutes is shorter than usual, most of them are closer to 2 hours for me.
Probably a 6.5/10. The episode was short and the story didn't quite work for me because I had no attachment to any character. I did like the opening, the updated graphics and animations, the music and Michonne herself.

Yeah but I feel they couldnt do both with that scenario, if we knew sam or norma more we wouldnt have that mystery about who was in the right
