I just noticed that the file size is actually smaller than SMI:SE. 1.75GB as opposed to 2.16GB.
  • edited July 2010
Well, the first SE had its backgrounds at 1080p, while MI2 only has them at 720p. Might be the reason.
  • edited July 2010
That's really odd. I expected it to be about 3 times as big. I hope they didn't compress the game too much...

All of TOMI is smaller than Monkey Island 2, so it's not that bad.

Then again, it's only a preload, there might be some files missing.

Really? Why would they do that? Is that confirmed? It says 1080p on XBL.

Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of pre-loading?

Looks like it's the speech-file that's half a GB smaller than the one from the first SE, and the main PAK-file is less than half as big. I guess they've just use a better compression.

    File size comparisons (M11SE / MI2SE):

    MonkeyX.pak (1214 MB / 494 MB)
    MusicOriginal.xwb (104 MB / 369 MB)
    MusicNew.xwb (22 MB / 365 MB) :) :) :)
    Speech.xwb (819 MB / 342 MB)
    Ambience.xwb (37 MB / 183 MB)
    SFXnew.xwb (22 MB / 7 MB)
    Commentary.xwb ( - / 43 MB)
Really? Why would they do that? Is that confirmed? It says 1080p on XBL.
It's just an assumption on my part, as each and every piece of background art we've seen of the game was shown at 720p, while the first SE was promoted with screens at 1080p.

There must be some files missing to prevent you from playing the game.

Steam games won't launch without Steam's approval. It's the way it's set up. Not because there are missing files. That's not how it works.

Look at the size of the monkey2.pak vs monkey1.pak.

    There ARE files missing.

Laserschwert already established that it's the speech files that are smaller due to more efficient compression.
  • edited July 2010
Hey, I'm just assuming here. And the PAK-file is still way smaller as well. But I'm pretty sure, that the files are complete.
  • edited July 2010
Either way, Steam doesn't prevent preloaded games from running by withholding files. That's not how it works. That's a fact.

But, monkeyX.pak contains the graphics, not the speech. And there are a LOT more graphics in MI2SE than SMISE.

    See below.

As it says in Steam in the game's info, once preloaded "When the game is officially released, you'll be able to play the game immediately."

I think steam are withholding files so we can't play it till they launch it

What you think and what is are two different things.

    I hate compression.

hehe I dont rly think that I coudlnt resit after seeing it 5 times on here :P

I wish there was a way to use the new music with the old graphics. I tried renaming the files, but it didn't work.
  • edited July 2010
You can do it with SMI:SE if you extract the soundtrack and replace the proper cd tracks and run it in ScummVM. But you don't get speech (but people are working on that). It'll never happen with MI2, though, because the soundtracks are MIDI.....at least it looks that way.
  • edited July 2010
Hey! I never knew you could pre-load! I would have done that to save time. Oh well. To late in the night now. I'll have to follow through with my original plan and have it download and install whilst I complete my chores and clean out my fishy tank. (I suppose it's just as well I have to do those things as my experience of downloading on steam is that it takes a very long time).

Obviously the classic music in the MI2SE isn't MIDI any more - hence about the same file size as the new music. So, who knows if it's possible to extract the classic data-files from the PAK and run them with ScummvM, while using digital music?
  • edited July 2010
I was hoping to do that with the Special Edition.

    MusicOriginal.xwb (104 MB / 369 MB)
    MusicNew.xwb (22 MB / 365 MB) :) :) :)
That makes me assume that they sampled the entire original soundtrack as well. Interesting that they don't emulate the MIDI playback then.

So. No Monkey Island 2 today, eh (7:00 PM Orlando). Gonna wait 'till tomorrow and get the Xbox version, then.

I guess it's easier when running on so many platforms... plus the switch between classic and SE will probably be perfectly in sync music wise.

Just wondering, why are a lot of you guys saying its going to take you half a day to finish the download? I'm at 97% after an hour and a half and it's only 9AM on the 7th in Melbourne.
  • edited July 2010
The only reason I suspect they did it that way (classic soundtrack) is to emulate the MT-32, on which the original MI2 sounds best and was written for. Although, based on the trailer (with the amazing CGI) it doesn't sound as good as a real MT-32.

Because once it's actually released there'll be a HECK of a lot more people downloading it....crashing the servers.

It took me about 1 and a half hour at 2M, ie. the most common speed according to Steam's statistics. The same statistics goes down to 33k, though. People should know their speed and can estimate their time their selves, of course.

Um, I don't have a desktop shortcut, and when I try to make one it says I already have one on the desktop. Should I try again on release day?

An 8.9 instead of a 9.0 is just a copout way of saying "this is a great adventure game and we know it" but "its still an adventure game so we have to show prejudice and be utter bastards and give it less credit than it deserves". And yes I did imagine the reviewer wearing a top hat, monocle, with a gold tooth, and opera cape, and tying adventure games to train tracks.

And no no one is convincing me this isn't prejudice. NO ONE. I HATE THAT GUY NOW. HE IS NOT MY HERO.
