Could you please mention what the problems you had with the spitting contest and Stan were? but put them in spoiler tags.
I think the problems with those two puzzles are because
both of them are timed puzzles, and maybe it's difficult to do the right action on the right moment using PS3 controls
    .
I had difficulties in SOMI:SE, on the
herring-seagull-plank puzzle outside SCUMM bar kitchen
and I suppose it's something similar

Yeah, the puzzle in MI2 near the beginning with Largo,
where you have to go into his room & jab the pin into the voodoo doll of him before he kicks you out of his room,
I found that a bit tight for time with the new UI.

I was actually thinking about buying this but it really sounds like they dropped the ball in the gutter here.

Default action button - Although I like the new interface, I do miss the default action from the original game. They kept it intact with the last SE, so you could open a door just by pressing B/right click or look at something without actually having to choose the verb.

I can only comment on the XBLA version but that does have what can be used as a default action button as holding the right trigger in brings up what verbs can be used with the default verb already selected so if you just press it once the default action takes place.

I care. I'd want the game for both, especially now that the voice track is available in classic mode as well.

Even if it is just a side item, classic mode is included for a reason. It's part of the package. You don't get a burger and fries, notice that the fires are just an uncooked potato, and think "Well, I just bought this meal for the burger anyway, the fries were just ancillary to the main point".

The fact that you can switch from one to the other at any point during gameplay is an important feature to some people, myself included. The ability to compare scenes directly against each other is pretty nifty, and honestly, yes, I would like one executable that contains both games. I'd like to play the original, because at the end of the day I prefer it because that was the game I grew up playing. The Special Edition, the shiny new thing with the voices and the art, that is a distraction, a new set of content within the original that gives me something to enjoy when I play through a classic again. In the long run, it is not going to replace the original, and having it there is an important part of the deal for me. I can't be the only person who feels this way.

Also, yes, I'd prefer to listen to commentary tracks with the original game up on-screen.

    This.

I own the original, so I can play that any time, and I will still buy the SE, but if you're selling the SE as the ultimate edition like Lucasarts have been doing, it should be complete. This is like releasing a blu-ray version of the Star Wars films and cutting out the opening crawl. It makes no sense at all.

If a remake of a film or game differs from the original version, fine, I can live with that, it's what remakes/re-imaginings should do. If you're releasing an upgraded version of something with better graphics and better sound and a more mobile CGI Jabba the Hut it should compliment the original version, not cut sequences out for no apparent reason.

The Xbox 360 version weights around 980 MB.
The PC version weights 1800 MB...
So it seems they have compressed the music again in the console version (and maybe other things), like in the first game.
I have bought the PC version.

    Too right.

And can bet we will never know why.

Right thats it im getting so drunk tonight and gonna have a drunken angry rant on the new luasarts forum!

Wally's voice actor - He sounds so different. I can hear that the voice actor is trying to play the same character he did all those years ago in CMI, but he blatantly doesn't know that game or that character as well as I do & I can hear the difference immediately. Perhaps the absence of "Mr. Brush" lines in MI2 don't help. :p

Damn, considering yesterday I said this:
Which is why I'm impressed they have got Neil Ross back! For a character who was a small part in Curse, Neil must have to do some remembering on how to do that voice again, when I think of Neil these days I just get an image and hear his voice from Metal Gear Solid 3 as Colonel Volgin.

    :p

I'm actually going home now, open a beer and play me some LeChuck's Revenge, which I'm still looking forward to despite the apparent shortcomings.

Oh come on, if you were going home to open a beer & play the original on ScummVM you'd be looking forward to that too! :p

    and your point is?

After reading this thread, I'd have to be worse than drunk to play a game like this. It looked so promising too, very truthful. Now it sounds about as authentic as a paper skeleton.

I'll pass on this one LUCASFARTS!
  • edited July 2010
i still love the game it just all this build up and when you switch it on the first thing you want is that funky musical intro that gets you in the spirit of the whole thing is totally missing and no reason why.
  • edited July 2010
So guys who have already got it, is it worth buying?
I was planning to but there seems to be lots of negative feedback, so now I'm undecided...

Oh come on, the original is still there, takes this as your opportunity to pay for the original! Besides, in this one the mistakes seem to be mainly in the music and some casting, which to be fair, there is a lot more in the second game compared to the first game. At least the art style isn't as bad as the first special edition and a lot more feeling has been put into this!
  • edited July 2010
I think it's great. Can't really comment on the classic mode as I've only been switching to it occasionally to compare the art but the main, SE mode looks and plays great.

I'm still getting it for both PS3 and PC. I mean, there are issues, of course. But for an incredible price I get remastered music, voice acting and HD graphics. Heck, I would've paid 10 bucks to get the music alone!

I think peoples gripes are mainly superficial, in that it isn't completely identical to the original. If you play it for the new HD part, and see it as a sort of directors cut, then you should be fine. It depends on how much nostalgia you have linked to the game (too much leads to anger at the small changes).

And if you haven't played it before (like me!) then you should definately give it a go.

Of course, i have yet to play the SE, but from what people are saying, the HD version is basically very good, and reasonably faithfull (minus the intro). The issues lie with the original version (which is ironic, as that could probably have been left alone!), which isn't really used that much. Just occasionally for comparisons.

Yes, it's there. It's just not all there, by the looks of it. And I already paid for the original. ;)

so why was the intro removed? I thought about it, but didn't come up with a good reason...

so why was the intro removed? I thought about it, but didn't come up with a good reason...

I just watched the old intro on youtube. Thinking about it, the credits at the start were kind of boring. I guess they had to remove the whole sequence to remove those, which they thought would put people off. Which is true. I hate it when films have an extensive credits sequence before the film starts. I just want to get on with watching it!

Credits at the end of games are fine, because there is usually a post credist cutscene, or something to watch, so you usuually just wait.

Maybe because there wasn't a good reason for it. ;)

Just noticed a Manny like head in the SE version. Nice little touch. Kinda like the one in SMI:SE.

Lucas Arts doesn't have any good ideas any more, FOOL.

I pity the any lonely body who puts faith into LucasTarts!

Like I said, they did redo the theme and you can hear it over the scrolling text credits and the menu. But the same credit sequence from the original game is missing. The music is there (not in classic mode), but not the animation sequence.

    *snip*

No. It's the same theme but in classic mode it sounds awful. It uses the wrong instruments than what the MT-32 used. But both the classic and special edition modes are missing the "Soundtrack" patch instrument. Everything in each Woodtick hut sounds correct, but in-between theme that plays when you're walking between them is awful (in classic mode) and missing an instrument.

So it sounds ok in SE mode?

You're mixing up two different themes I was talking about. In the first paragraph you quoted I was talking about the main title theme. In the second paragraph I was talking about the Woodtick themes.

1UP.com gave it a C: "HD version is great, classic is badly broken". I think I'll wait until Steam has a sale before buying it.

Classic mode isn't that bad. Don't believe 1UP. They have no idea what they're talking about.

They probably had to drop IMUSE to allow the digital music to function on top of the old engine. Infact I bet that the old scumm engine is being emulated within a new engine hence the loss of some features.

They didn't drop iMuse. It's still there. They don't know what they're talking about.

No they didn't. You can go ahead and buy it. It's a great purchase with great content. Don't worry about it. They didn't drop the ball. It's a spectacular remake.

Yes, it's worth buying. Get it.

PS3, XBL, and iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad(?). Not sure about anywhere else. Hasn't unlocked yet for me on Steam either.

Just finished playing through the game, first time I've done so in a long while, and really loved it.

I understand where some of the complaints are coming from the iMuse seems to have been attempted but doesn't work as well as it did originally. Definitely not a straight cut to the different tunes as some of the reviews have stated though, and it's nothing I felt ruined the game. The intro is misssing which is odd, but the ending sequence after the credits is present in the classic mode. Again, odd that they didn't include these things but not game breaking.

My only other complaint is with some of the voice acting. As others have said, Wally sounds odd and nothing like what he did in the other games and certain other VO's are just plain bad. But these complaints are pure nitpicking.

Who's been miscast in this game? I know Largo sounds a little off, but who else?
