Sorry if I'm repeating stuff people have said, I've been away from this thread for a short while today, but some observations now that I've been able to play it on PS3, Xbox and PC some of the way through

    1) PC and PS3 seem to be nearly identical, the music problems in the PS3 version such as the out of sync bone song are still in the PC version, but over-all the PC version has slightly smoother transitions, for example in woodtick and is in higher quality audio which sounds nicer.

    2) For some reason simulated iMUSE is missing from the Xbox version entirely. It's like they forgot. There's some really bad stuff, too, like the effect of the gradually added instruments in the swamp being ruined by having it skip back to the start of the track when you enter the shack.

Basically, if you're a big fan of the music, get the PC version.

    3) I've extracted the music and had a look at the files and a listen to it, and there are some interesting things:

    a) The imuse in woodtick is quite complex. They recorded about 10 transitions for each of the locations so that it would go smoothly back into the ambient woodtick theme. A lot of work went into that
    b) Earlier I mentioned a missed cue (it skips the dramatic church organ bit when Largo steals the beard, and moves onto the voodoo theme prematurely). Turns out the church organ bit is in there, this must just be a programming error.
    c) Similarly, a few people have noted that the little motif that plays when the mouth of the voodoo shack closes is missing. It is missing - but the files are there, just not used. It's a shame, they sound quite nice!
    d) The soundtrack sounds wonderful as a whole now that I've had a good listen to it on its own.

I hope some of that is interesting to someone.

I like the controls more in this special edition compared to the last one. The only thing I need the keyboard for is to show inventory, which means I can just sit back, relax, and take in the piratey atmosphere!

You don't even need the keyboard for that. You can click the mousewheel to show the inventory.

So nobody else cares that the music is completely missing from Dinky Island jungle in all versions? Even classic mode?

Just finished it with all achievements. A great run. I definitely didn't hear an hour's worth of commentary like Craig said there'd be. I actually feel like there could have been a lot more. I missed a couple at the beginning because I accidentally turned it off so I'm going to go hear those now.

Also the music for Booty Island in the SE mode is awful.

I gotta ask this, the music on Booty Island, even though it's played on the Classic Version, hearing it in the SE seems more realistic, in an odd way, the party is happening at the mansion, so hearing that music in the town as some distant fade kind of made the town feel more real. Besides, the music didn't really bother me, it was Kate's totally not bothered repeating lines "Glass bottom boat, Glass bottom boat, boat rides, Glass bottom boat", that was actually quite annoying to hear.

Really? That's a shame, the mysterious music there kind of made a nice prelude to the even more mysterious stuff in the tunnels.

just finished it. here are some notes i made ( I Wrote them on a paper that i had next to me while i was playing ^_^)

okay, first. Wally - terrible. there are moments where he sort of reminiscent of the CMI wally, but those are very rare. weird accent, no so great overall. What's the point of bringing the same actors as CMI? bring the same voice directors!

When talking to Men of LMF, in the original there's an added accordion sound to the music, which does not exist in the SE. shame.

when entering Largo's room, the music roughly cuts to the largo variation of the theme, instead of subtly fading like the original.

When entering the voodoo lady's shack, there's supposed to be a little musical cue when the mouth closes (like a little "bada pam"). does not exist here, or in the classic version.

LeChuck's walking animation is too fast. the whole idea was that he was a rotting corpse that drags himself around. I saw no dragging.

Skeleton dance. srsly, wtf? best part of game - officially ruined

for some reason, when i push the garbage can to get the cook to chase me, i can only do it by running to the left. if i run to the right, he goes back in. weird.

some timed puzzles get a little hard due to quickness. getting Stan in the coffin is the best example. by the time i opened the inventory he was already out of there...

Rapp scallion animation was HORRIBLE! whether it was his reincarnation or just his 2 fps lip movement, it was obvious that they half assed that whole sequence.

Cliff at booty island - no scroll down, why? ruins the moment.

No music in Dinky's jungles. WTFF? makes the whole music when you see the X pretty much pointless in terms of atmosphere.

End music was ruined by a reused MI1SE score. Also, Elaine's scene was out of place.

Commentaries were nice, but the important stuff were left unexplained.

Thought I'd just let you know that I'm working on mixing together the extracted MI2 soundtrack files into something more usable as a soundtrack to listen to. I've started with Captain Kate. Sounds pretty good! I'll keep you posted

Oh that reminded me, that transformation "boo boo de doo" noises were out of sync for me, but I quickly forgot about that once the music became awesome and was impressed with Rapp Scallion's voice.

Yes, the two pipes joke is still there!

Yeah I didn't have a problem with Kate Capsize's voice, per se, but her acting seems like she had absolutely no idea what the context was, ever. So far that's the only character that I've been really disappointed by.

I like how people make blanket comments about other peoples' input that adds about as much to the discussion as a big "no u". I like how any sort of critical viewpoint is discarded disparagingly under the blanket assumption that anyone who happens to take issue with something simply does so to get a rise out of everyone else around them. I really like how people are put under a big "complainer" umbrella term, whether or not they might happen to enjoy the vast majority of something that has been made, whether or not they have valid viewpoints, whether or not these views are easily backed-up(by example or reliable sources), reasoning, and most importantly, whether or not the posts are actually made in anything resembling a hostile or inflammatory manner towards other members of the board.

These are things that I simply adore.

    no u

My copy of the “newest” game finished downloading an hour ago and I got to play it for least a half an hour. So far, I really like it. The animations are smoother and I like the music but the controls get some time to get use to because I'm still a bit use to the ones from the other Special Edition. I laughed out loud when Largo cursed at me to get out of the room at the Inn. I don’t know what is about that “beep” that makes things funnier, whether it needs to be censored or not.

“Get the **** out of my room!”

Finished it late yesterday evening as a speed run (for the trophies and after having found out that I missed all the commentary tracks for the first chapter) and from what I've seen I love it. Will take my sweet time with it this weekend on a second run and really take it all in, including the commentary.

So does anyone think Lucasarts will say why they cut the intro?

I wonder if someone in Telltale has asked any of thier contacts in Lucasarts as to why it was cut (using a blunt rusty knife) from the game???

I'm still left with a feeling of having an incomplete game though and nothing will change my mind regardless of the greatness of the rest of the remake....
put it this way, what if any of the new Transformers movies were made without optimus prime? or if Tales of Monkey Island actually did kill of Guybrush and you had to finsih the game as some other character ?
It just wouldnt feel right would it?

(yes i am aware the new movies were pants but its just an example)
  • edited July 2010
I know its doubtful but maybe Lucasarts will release a patch to add the intro, and fix the timing issues on some of the puzzles.

I actually still like my analogy of releasing Star Wars in HD and omitting the opening crawl. :P

But yeah, I think we'll get an explanation some time in the near future. There's too much backlash about it to ignore.

Ok agreed on the analogy !

The fact is that LucasArts released an incomplete game to make the July 7th deadline. Money over fans.

    1. Missing intro
    2. Sprites that never were redone/missing animation
    3. Missing music
    4. Bone song out of sync.
    5. Timing issues

What really gets me is that instead of building the SE on top of the original like before, they totally redid the original. I'm sure there's more I don't know about the process, but it's undeniable that classic mode in Secret was the original game, and classic mode in MI2 has been screwed with, which not only ruins classic mode, but it's also the cause of several of the problems in SE mode.

    I've read it's the original MI2.

It doesn't run the same. The biggest proof is in the music, the event timing still being screwed up, the credits being altered for the SE, and the scrolling image on the cliff being changed into a cut. Even without the voice acting, it is not the same experience as playing the original game in ScummVM.

Oh my god, I love this remake so bloody much. :D And I was right about James Arnold Taylor and William Kasten. :p

    William Kasten what?

    William Kasten what?
He voices the clerk at the Booty Boutique.

And Ralphie. In pretty much the same voice as Max, only slightly more gruff.

Yeah, this is definitely intentional, it's meant to represent that there's party on the island but it's far away. This is not something that has to be fixed.

Yeah, it was great for the atmosphere, but I just want a clean version of the track to listen to. :p They should've had it playing without the processing in the costume shop or something.

this. I think the changing of presidents in LEC probably stopped the budget for the game and they just released what they had up until then.

excellent point. why do they only employ presidents who only like sports games or FPS style games?????

if all the comments and threads on numerous forums etc are anything to go by then the adventure/point&click genre is a definate money maker.

nice little touch, in the SE the helper in the callbox is a guy (and is dubbed by a man), but in classic version it's the original woman and dubbed by a woman. So you get some spoken dialog that can only be heard in classic.

Yeah, this was a nice touch. Although the voice for the woman was extremely quiet.

The fact that the plaque says 'cheeter' for the woman & 'chester' for the man amused me slightly too.

I would have bought this but it's exclusively Stream. Which is truly a DICK move.

No it's not. It is not possible to waste more than one piece of eight into the grog machine. Also the classic mode intro credits are missing there.
Odd. Why would they do that to the XBox version?
Also I noticed how the emulated MT-32 sounds even better then the SE classic track. The emulation is growing better and better. You can still tell the difference to a real one, but it sounds better then the last time I tried.

I noticed that too. And don't forget to ask for SWOTL :)

Indeed, Steam is awful. I feel like I'm being treated like a criminal every time I use it. It might be worth buying it from there, then just getting a crack so it runs without Steam.

That's the very problem with DRM, it's moronic. Those who pirate the game get treated less like a criminal those those who pay for it and then people who've paid end up downloading a pirated file just to play hassle free. Stoooopid
