Again, for those that are talking about the shortness of the games list, if you take a look at the wording of the press release:
The complete list of games to be released on July 8 via Steam includes:

That "includes" means that this is not the complete list. There should be more, so I think it would be good to hold off on the "why wasn't this game included" discussion until Wednesday when all of the games are released.

I don't know. SoMI was a good choice for the SE treatment because there were no voices, and the graphics were pixelated. DOTT has full voice and the graphics are perfectly fine, IMO.
I was talking more of a business perspective from their take. Maniac Mansion is a hard remake to sell for today's market due to its difficulty and your ability to die - DOTT or Grim are probably the most profitable IPs after Monkey Island.

    ...

Speaking of candidates for SE, I was actually just playing MI:2 and it doesn't need a SE as badly as MI:1 did. The improved musical atmosphere and graphic updates from the original 1 to 2 help a lot. If a MI2:SE never gets made it wouldn't be a tragedy - the original is still highly playable and enjoyable.

Yeah, I guess when they said "old school fans will be pleased," they weren't taking into consideration how selfish most old school fans are.

Seriously, this is big news, and good news.
It's good news, but the original hype was overplayed and some people got their hopes up incorrectly thus the negative reaction.

OK, after reading this, I'm not so confident in my previous post about there being more. It sounds more like a badly worded press release.

But, if that is the case, this is just the first wave.

Very disappoint indeed. Unless Grim Fandango gets XP/Vista-ized.

Check out the article Estel just linked to. Tons of new info in there including the possibility of Grim Fandango getting a SE. He also basically gave away that they're working on Iphone ports. Darrell Rodriguez is the man!

I do wonder what version of Loom will it be, the one with the shortened dialogues?

Yeah. Like I said before, I'm very much against the lame trend of announcing when you're going to make an announcement. That's just setting yourself up to disappoint.

That said, there was really no other plausible direction that this announcement could go. "Not new IP" and "Not specific old IP" can only mean "old IP in general," and when new remakes or sequels rely on the fate of a game that hasn't launched yet, that really only leaves re-releases. I don't know how people expected anything different.

Indeed this. Half of Kotaku is bemoaning that it wasn't a Battlefront 3 announcement >.<.

Seeing as how the press release mentions only releasing 10 games and the list contains exactly 10 games, it's not a stretch to believe that's all the games.

The July 8th part is more important, as it implies more games will be added at a later, unspecified date.

Yeah, see my next post after that.

I guess it was more wishful thinking.

But, the joystiq blog post does indicate that there will be more.

I wish they chose GoG instead, but it's nice to see it coming to Steam regardless.

I think it makes a lot more sense business wise to use steam than gog.com.
Steam is by far the biggest of the two, which = more sales.
Gog.com I see as more of a niche site. It's a nice service yes, but mostly for a select audience.

sadly, it is no new sequels (maniac mansion, alas!). they are releasing a number of their old titles on steam. i am sure some will be pleased.
  • edited July 2009
And for those who want MORE games, this list is part one. it's just a few guys who have to remake these for modern systems! More to come!

    Tada!

its not remakes ..i hope you guys realize
  • edited July 2009
Yeah that's probably not the best wording for the easily confused. By remakes he/they mean adapting for compatibility.
  • edited July 2009
Oh well. The best news in this is probably that Lucas wants to experiment with the adventure genre and their old franchises. Maybe if LOOM sells, we get the 2nd and 3rd part eventually or sequels to other games or a completely new IP.

I just wanna play Grim Fandango...

Edit: But definitely not on $team.

If it does sell, they better! ;=)

Btw.. I hope that the re-releases will be in HD! =)

I'm also particularly excited about Loom, for the same reason! Would love to see the sequels finally get made. This could be what gives them that final push to make the sequels!

i just hope its not gonna be another starwars ... everything related to maniac mansion would be great!

EDIT: oh one second too late ... oh no there is no maniac mansion on the list :( i hope they gonna add these games to steam too!
  • edited July 2009
If these ones prove popular, they might add more in the future!

I wonder which version of Loom will be on Steam. Wasn't there some issue way back when about LucasArts not having the rights to print new copies of the CD talkie version or am I just completely making that up?

Also, for those who are disappointed that they're only releasing a small fraction of their back catalogue for now, it seems to me that the games they are releasing now are the ones they decided didn't need a special edition treatment. I imagine if SoMI:SE sells well, they'll start on Maniac Mansion: SE etc. as well, and if it doesn't sell well, they'll probably decide to just re-release the original versions on Stream as they've done with these titles.
  • edited July 2009
That's a little disappointing, but nice to see they're supporting the classic games to ensure they play on modern PCs. I hope this means they consider making some new adventure games... come on Maniac Mansion 3!

They've stated that it's the Talkie version of LOOM.

Sweet! I'll definitely end up buying it then. I only ever played the EGA disk version before.

I'm finally going to have to start using my Steam account for things other than Audiosurf...

As I said before...Steam is the future and even Lucasarts have jumped on board. YESSSSSSS!

But in all fiarness, I know some of you dont like Steam and I am pretty sure that they are releasing on Direct 2 Drive and Stardock as well, so at least you have a choice.
Either way lets all be glad that we can play all of those AWESOME games again.
I believe that by buying these games, it is our chance to really show Lucasarts how much we love adventure games and this will give them the kick start to realize we want more adventure games.
Oh yeah and finance Rob Gilbert to make that fabled Monkey Island game.
And get Tim Shafer back to work on something.....Hopefully set in the Grim universe.
Manny was just the coolest game character.

I agree that the games not listed are probably the ones they are considering for a SE, because i can't see why they wouldn't have Lechuck's Revenge on the list (with all the MI news) unless they were going to save it for a SE.
  • edited July 2009
I will say this. With them even re-releaseing old stuff and semi newer stuff there is a chance though small that if sales go well. Lucas-Arts will open there eyes and say "Hey we have that game we canceled. You Know Full Throttle and Hit the Road? Put them on steam."

Its a small chance. Personal if the price is right i will be buying these games post haste. Oh and I already own a Big Lots Armed and Dangerous or what ever game. Simple but very funny videos.

I raged a bit about this on my Twitter, Lucasarts promised an announcement that should appeal to old school fans but this is stupid. Sure these games on Steam is a great thing, and I hope a whole new generation get exposed to the awesome adventure games of old but any 'old school veteran' as they say will already play these games to death regularly and find not much excitement here.

It's a great announcement, I'm just a little cheesed at how Lucasarts talked it up on their Twitter.

If any more remakes or sequels come out of this, then shut me up :)
  • edited July 2009
The announcement was similar to what I expected, so I can't really call it disappointing. A part of the article, however, peaked my interest:
While these ten titles are straight ports – so no Steam Achievements, and no fancy new graphics and sound a la Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition – LucasArts is considering enhanced versions of other titles, though "a lot of it will ultimately depend on the commercial success of Monkey Island Special Edition," we're told. "We have the plans in our back pocket and if things go extremely well, we'll roll out those plans and put them into action. Whether it's Maniac, Day of the Tentacle, or Grim."

On one hand I would love for them to make SE for these games.....but on the other, would they manage to ruin the titles with an SE? It is also interesting that MI2 was not quoted at the end of the....um...quote. Does this mean that if MI:SE is successful, the next title will not be a monkey island game?
