So what's so good about that :(
Bu i like how he says "Digital adventurey goodness."
This might only refer to MI:SE, but maybe it implies more?

    ...

    ...

    ...

... Gonna try out Battlefront II. Never got around to that before.
  • edited July 2009
Yes, not terribly exciting, but there is a possibility that if it's supported enough, they may decide that revisiting the franchises may not be a bad idea.
  • edited July 2009
Not Bad, should help make some profit especially with how popular Steam is.
  • edited July 2009
    Yep, I was wrong. Boring.

Well to us, I guess. Although the release date for the SE was posted - 15th. It'll be on Steam.

    ...the selection is even underwhelming.

Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
    LOOM™
    The Dig

Really? Other than Fate, none of those are the ones I'd be the quickest to recommend to people new to adventure games to play. Especially not the Last Crusade - that hasn't held up well for modern audiences. Hopefully they're really cheap.

Might sell a lot of copies of Loom though with the MI:SE advert though.

Hope everyone saw this great announcement in the Press Release!

The Monkey Island celebration continues on July 15 when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

Well, now the "ask me about Loom" joke on Monkey Island SE will make sense to new gamers.
  • edited July 2009
Called it :P (even the release date of SoMI :D)
  • edited July 2009
    Awesome. Just awesomes.

This is one of those situations where what happened was cool and it's good news but it was overhyped and I feel let down despite the news itself. They should've also not hidden the release date in the press thing.

Depending on the full list of games, I'm OK with this. I know the main reply is; "But we have ScummVM, we don't need this." ScummVM is all fine a good, but I have a widescreen monitor now. If I try and play anything through ScummVM on fullscreen, it's distorted. I would imagine that the games being released will scale accurately to modern monitors, which I really really like.

Plus, there are a few games, even on the short list, that I never got a chance to try. Games that up until this announcement were only available to me by less than legal means.
  • edited July 2009
that was the news that would make the old school fans happy ?

the old school fans are already bought these games and playing them with scummvm... if there's no updated graphics in these games on steam I really don't see the point

ps : if you have a widescreen monitor you should have an option in your graphic card drivers to not stretch the image when the resolution is 4:3... and who knows if that won't be an issue with the steam games

Its very good to see they support Steam :D simply cannot wait GG Lucas Arts, very nice move :)

The complete list of games to be released on July 8 via Steam includes:

    This isn't the full list.

    Just a few comments.

First, I hope these games are not overpriced. As in, each of these old adventure games should cost under $10.

Second, I am ecstatic to see LOOM on that list, given all of the other choices they had to list, LOOM made it. This gives me an enormous amount of hope for the LOOM saga to be finished (or at least continued, GET ON IT TELLTALE!)

Third, anyone else notice that there is a ton of announcements regarding Monkey Island, but Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge isn't mentioned at all? Maybe they are reserving their judgment on whether to release it in its original format or to make a special edition of this game.

Overall though, a fairly disappointing announcement as I already own most of these games. Still, very very good news for the adventure game genre.

I own a DS. Does that count?

Saying that I wasn't aware of it was my way of saying "I don't know enough about that to judge the accuracy of your statement, but I am a tiny bit surprised". It wasn't supposed an argument or a counter-argument of any kind. And I wasn't really to know that, I was only going on the quoted message at the beginning. (I'm not a member of 'Twitter' and have no intention of becoming one. This is why I asked for updates on this news in this thread, being that now is the day that the announcement in question is supposed to be made).

I have to ask, because it seems implied by the tone of your posts, have I said or done something that particularly offended you, Mr Gibbon? If so then I apologise.

Not at all! sorry if it came across that way... (and reading back, I did seem a bit snappy) must be all the adventure game news getting too much for me!

    On topic, Steam? meh.

At least it may get the genre some new fans, it just hope the kids of today can see past dated graphics and enjoy them!

    Ah. Excellent.

I'm thinking the best ones are not going to make it though as they'll wait to "special editionize" them. I wouldn't be shocked to see Maniac Mansion but not Day of the Tentacle.

I don't know. SoMI was a good choice for the SE treatment because there were no voices, and the graphics were pixelated. DOTT has full voice and the graphics are perfectly fine, IMO.

That's a good point actually - I'm not sure they will be able to cross that barrier. I tried to replay the really old stuff lately but couldn't handle the poor graphics and sound, who knows what a teenager now would think about them.

I'm kind of disappointed with this announcement; I don't own most of those adventure games, but I'd rather own them in box format and not digitally.

I was happy to see they showed The Dig and LOOM some special consideration, but it's too bad games like Grim Fandango and Curse of Monkey Island won't be on there in updated non-buggy release forms.
  • edited July 2009
    This is just the beginning
I guess they are saving the best games for more special editions?

Personally I'm happy with the news. I never got to play Loom back in the day, and I lost most the games I already had.
  • edited July 2009
Hopefully Monkey Island Special Edition will support Steam achivements.

Very disappoint indeed. Unless Grim Fandango gets XP/Vista-ized.
  • edited July 2009
Yeah, I guess when they said "old school fans will be pleased," they weren't taking into consideration how selfish most old school fans are.

Seriously, this is big news, and good news.
  • edited July 2009
Yeah this really suggesst the best games will come in Special editions.

if this ever happens, its pretty much all because of Telltalegames :)
  • edited July 2009
I wish they chose GoG instead, but it's nice to see it coming to Steam regardless.
  • edited July 2009
Well, it seems that July 8th is just the first wave - more to be released as time goes on. I think this is a great idea. I'd love to see pricing.
Oh and Loom - if it is the VGA talkie edition (I can't see why it wouldn't be) - it would be a great download. I don't know if many people ever played Loom with voice, but it's great. Voices are top notch.
But for now - all of us who have the games and are able to play them still don't have much to be excited about. I just find it funny that the guy on Twitter said it is great news for old school fans - yet half of the games being released tomorrow came out within the past 5 years. I guess this is just the start of the whole catalog.
It is great that the new president is dedicated to LucasArt's roots.

WAIT! Does this mean we could see an XP/Vista compatible version of TIE Fighter?!
