I am truly sorry for any difficulties this has caused while we are looking into the issue. Unfortunately at this time I do not have any new updates to provide, and recommend try deleting and re-downloading the game from the Playstation Store if you have not tried this yet, then see if you are able to start the game successfully.
This is what I have done. Here my result: No black screen on version 1.8 anymore BUT I am not able to download the fourth episode at all and my savegames cannot be used any longer. Nice QM.

I finished episode 2 the other night with episode 4 downloaded and the new update and it worked fine
got up the next day to start 3 (on the same save) and I began having this problem
and I'm super bummed because I haven't had a chance to play episode 4
please fix, I love telltale's games, especially game of thrones
I have found that I can play episode 4 just fine on my PS3 as long as I don't install the update that causes the issue. The episode is definitely working, its the update. I have stopped automatic updates, refuse to update and have been able to play. They need to fix the update.
I've posted on here numerous times for little updates and here's my new one. I downloaded the latest update before downloading episode 4, got the black screen of death, deleted my save files and the game started up again. I'm in North America and had multiple save slots. I've heard that the problem may lay in having multiple save slots. So I restarted the game from the beginning (AGAIN!) and finally got to episode 4, played it, enjoyed it (despite the multiple restarts I've had to do since episode 3) and everything still appears to be working fine. This time I'm going to only keep one save slot going, because I suspect since we're going more than 2 months since this problem started with no fix that A) Telltale has no idea what the issue is and has no idea how to fix it. I assume we'll still have this problem with episodes 5 and 6 so we'll see if my keeping everything to one save slot this time eliminates the issue. It's that or play the game without installing the updates, which is no kind of solution. Once episode 5 comes out, if it happens again or if sticking to the one save slot works, I'll post on here and let everyone know. Because I have zero confidence Telltale will fix this, we're going to have to figure it out ourselves.
Uninstalling and reinstalling is working for me. I did not lose any progress and didn't have to purchase the game again. After I finish I'l try a second playthrough and see is it comes back. For now it's all good.

Paid a lot of money for all episodes and cant play...this cant be true...and they dont anything to help me.... last game i bought from you guys! I tryed everything...no updates...reinstalled...one save slot...nothing helps ...black screen stays
Hi everyone, so I've been reading that a lot of people are having a similar issue. I am running it on ps3. I finished episode 4 with no issues, a few days later went back and replayed most of the episode. About 3/4 of the way through I turned it off, came back to it later and now I get just a black screen after selecting the game from the PlayStation homepage. Been this way for weeks now. Update didn't do anything, and I'm not about to delete my saves in order to attempt a fix. Why has nothing been done yet? Had a similar issue with the walking dead, took forever for them to fix.
Update: It's been a few weeks and still no response from Tell Tale. Anyone else experiencing the same thing?
Yep I can't even play it and I brought it the day it came out!! I am jealous you played it! Sucks you have what I have now though. To be fair Telltale Mike said they are working on it to me but it's been over a week now and no statement on it. I just wish they would make a statement saying 'we are working on it and here is an update or we can't fix it unfortunately' I saw they have a new game out soon Michonne Walking Dead. I would be first in line as similar to walking dead 1 and 2, 400 days, wolf among us and I didn't even buy season pass so cost me more, which is fine as they deserve it for fantastic games; but nope not anymore if it is not fixed. I will give it another week but it seems like there will no official statement
Same Markus. Telltale Mike said to me they are working on it but that was over a week ago, I believe him it's just they should release a statement on support page saying what the update is or saying there is nothing we can do - I just want to know what the latest is. It's really frustrating as been a telltale number 1 fan for ages - they are the beautiful pieces of work. I will give it another week but I think it's getting silly now sadly

I've been doing some experimenting since I first posted on this forum and I have some information which I hope may be helpful to some out there. I first had the problem shortly after episode 3 was released and have had to delete my save files a couple of times in an effort to determine the nature of the problem through trial and error. After deleting my saves the last time, I waited until episode 4 was released and started a brand new playthrough starting back at episode one after the release of version 1.8. I was able to consistently access the game without running into the black screen problem by limiting myself to a single save file. But I knew this couldn't be the whole problem, because before the release of episode 3 I had 3 save states all saved at the end of episode 2 and never ran into the black screen issue. So after completing episode 4 on save state 1, I took a big risk and attempted a second save state. On save state 2 I was able to complete episode 1 again and I currently have the game saved early on in episode 2. As of now, I have not run into the black screen problem again, but I am hesitant to proceed further in my second save state because I believe the problem occurs with multiple save states wherein the second save state has data in episode 3 or beyond or possibly it may have something to do with save states for the first 2 episodes which were saved prior to version 1.6, 1.7, or 1.8. That would be something which TellTale would be better able to diagnose. For myself, I plan on continuing with my first save state as episodes 5 and 6 are released. Then I may go back and attempt multiple save states, especially if TellTale has a better idea of what the issue may be. I hope that this information was able to help some of you and/or help TellTale in nailing down the problem.
I can't get the game to start. It gives a blank screen and freezes the PS3 system. I deleted all files including all episodes and Home file. I downloaded all files again updated everything. Now I have a blank screen but the PS3 doesn't freeze. So my problem is I can't get my game to load and I get a blank screen.
Hey thanks for the reply. Wow really? It's been a while since it came out so you've been waiting the entire time! Yeah it's strange, played every episode with no problems, and then I go back to episode 4 to change one of the decisions I made. I turned off the game for a break, and then when I load it, nothing! Hope it clears up so you get a chance to play it. That's good to hear that they are 'working' on it. Yep, a statement would be great, instead they say nothing while people spend their money and get something that's not even playable. I didn't even know they had a Michonne Walking Dead game coming. I was a big fan of the 2 seasons of Walking Dead, although I did encounter a problem that took them forever to fix and even acknowledge. Me too, I never buy a season pass, although I should. But it's things like this that don't give me an incentive to purchase any more episodes. Hang in there man, you'll get to play it soon enough... Hopefully!

I too had played through the first 3 episodes on PS3, and had multiple save games. Then after reading through this thread I re-installed the game and deleted all save slots, restarting with only a single slot. I then played through the first 3 chapters without risking using more than one save slot, and I still got the black screen of death after completing chapter 3 and attempting to start the 4th. After investing many hours forced to replay the game multiple times over the past few months, the fact that Telltale games has released another chapter without fixing the previous one when this issue has been known since March is discouraging.
I have bought, played, and enjoyed both seasons of the walking dead, as well as "the wolf among us" so I'm trying hard to maintain my confidence in the developers based on the quality of those titles. Censoring myself from what I really want to say, I just have two constructive questions about this issue and others experiencing it:
Is everyone getting the black screen buying and updating the game by the chapter (like me) or are those with the season pass also unable to start the game after a certain chapter?
As I said above I already deleted, reinstalled, and replayed with 1 save slot. I did however update to version 1.08 after doing so, and was able to play through 3 chapters but not load the 4th. If I once again restart, but don't install the updates, can anyone confirm if this will make the game playable, has anyone tested that it will work consistently?
Look Telltale Mike, I get that you're all doing what you can, but it's been a month for me and I still can't play. Is there anyway to get a refund or some kind of information as to when the bug will be resolved ? Thank you.

Yeah I tried this out a while ago, and did the same, and the episode plays just fine. It seems like one of the updates is causing this for so many people.
I have found that I can play episode 4 just fine on my PS3 as long as I don't install the update that causes the issue. The episode is defin… moreitely working, its the update. I have stopped automatic updates, refuse to update and have been able to play. They need to fix the update.
And another one: I guess at this point I can skip explaining the symptoms and just add my name to the list of very disappointed users. Even if I would like to answer TelltaleMikes standard set of questions (which feel more and more like a stalling tactic), but as I'm not even able to access the start screen I can't even tell you which episodes I played when etc....
BTW, I also had trouble with dialogue audio overlapping or being skipped, which I also found a whole thread about. As far as I can tell, nothing has been done about that either. Well, there goes my season's pass. Certainly the last time I ever bought something from this company.
Other companies have a QA Department for stuff like that, and I'd like to apply for your equivalent of that. By the look of it that must be the most relaxed and undemanding job in the world.
Season's Pass user here, same problem. Unfortunately I can't really tell you which chapter I was last on (I was beyond the wall and met whatshisname's relative), since it's been a few weeks back, but everything was working "fine" then. "Fine" as in: apart from the other bugs that seem to not have been fixed although known for some time (skipping/overlapping dialogue, laggy experience before/during quick-action sequences or whatever they're called, etc.) Sorry btw, if I'm not as calm and collected as you still are (tip of the hat for that) but I'm not putting any money on them still trying to fix what essentially amounts to beyond EA-levels of unfinished productions. Yeah, I went there!

The sad thing is, since telltale doesn't release these AAA popular titles like EA and Bethesda do, not many people will hear about our problems compared to games like BF4 and Skyrim where everyone knows just how broken those games really are. This means if this issue isn't fixed, no one will notice or care, and we'll be completely ripped off.

it's because of the stupid update for PSN ever since I've updated their last version my games have been crashing my playstation wont start normally everything is slower and unstable Sony doesn't know what the hell they're doing they need to come out with the new upgrade and fast because this is pissing me off I paid money for Game that I can't even play
I truly don't think this is Telltale Games fault because all my other tell tale games work just fine and Game of Thrones was working just fine until I updated my PlayStation.. I don't think you guys should be so harsh on them at least not more than Sony

I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. Thank you @seany15 for providing the extra information on how you were able to resolve the issue. @Sduarte13 Deleting and re-downloading the game from your console will not harm your save files in the process.
I deleted the game and redownloaded it a few weeks ago. It worked and I was able to play and finish the episode. However when I came back to replay it a few days later, the black screen came back. So then a little while after that, I tried uninstalling and redownloading it like I did before and it still gave me a black screen.

i purchased the pass for this game months before i even played it, when i was buying this game i did not expect to spend weeks frustrated and unable to play as the game crashes my console each time i try to load it. instead of posting a question i decided to check the forum, to find hundreds of posts from people with the same problem and telltale have still done nothing to resolve this issue. every time i see a reply its usually the customer being fobbed off with a "we're working on it" and then absolutely no updates to keep us informed of any progress. i've been a fan of telltale games most of my life and am starting to feel like the company just doesnt care any more. these episodic games are full of glitches (if you can get them to work) so why are we having to wait months at a time for an episode to be released? when i played season 2 of the walking dead i was disappointed in the quality after waiting so long for it to be released, at least 6 months later than i was told when it was being made. so when are telltale going to fix this? i've had to reset my playstation so many times i'm starting to worry i'm going to break it (which happened to another console of mines) im getting so frustrated with this, i'm ready to delete the game and ask for my money back.
Im losing hope tbh. I really want to play the upcoming episode by myself and instead ill have to watch lp. i just love paying money for the games i cant play.
Gots won't come on everytime I clicked to play it on my ps3. the screen would just go black. I couldn't even go back to the main menu. I even restarted my system by hand multiple times. After deleting and then redownloading the episodes, the game wouldn't work still. I realized the only way to fix it was to delete the game utility (which is basically the saved files). I deleted my saved games, and redownloaded the episodes. The game works again, but I feel sadden that my hard work was for nothing. RIP saved file.
Someone know if this is fix already? Don't want to waste my time downloading again.
The damn last update fucked up the game. Perhaps they already updated?
If you still experience the issue after deleting and re-downloading the game from your console, please note that we are still investigating further into the issue, and hope to have an update in the near future that will resolve this for all affected users.

We are still investigating further into the issue at this time, but I hope to have more information on the issue soon. We have had reports that affected players were able to resolve this issue by deleting the game from their console, and re-downloading it (and the episodes + update) from the Playstation Store. (Please note that deleting the game content will not effect your save files on PS3, as your save files are stored inside your Save Data Utility folder)

Thread: Black Screen After Episode 4 Replay

Yeah I tried this out a while ago, and did the same, and the episode plays just fine. It seems like one of the updates is causing this for so many people.
I think it's less about not being able to fix it and more about not trying to.
I remember that at one point, I actually thought Telltale cared about their fans.
Haha no way! Glad it's working for you! I'll give it a try and hopefully won't delete the saved files lol. Life is strange, what's that?
I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. Thank you @seany15 for providing the extra information on how you were able to resolve the issue. @Sduarte13 Deleting and re-downloading the game from your console will not harm your save files in the process.
I deleted the game and redownloaded it a few weeks ago. It worked and I was able to play and finish the episode. However when I came back to replay it a few days later, the black screen came back. So then a little while after that, I tried uninstalling and redownloading it like I did before and it still gave me a black screen.
Thread: getting really ticked off now!
i purchased the pass for this game months before i even played it, when i was buying this game i did not expect to spend weeks frustrated and unable to play as the game crashes my console each time i try to load it. instead of posting a question i decided to check the forum, to find hundreds of posts from people with the same problem and telltale have still done nothing to resolve this issue. every time i see a reply its usually the customer being fobbed off with a "we're working on it" and then absolutely no updates to keep us informed of any progress. i've been a fan of telltale games most of my life and am starting to feel like the company just doesnt care any more. these episodic games are full of glitches (if you can get them to work) so why are we having to wait months at a time for an episode to be released? when i played season 2 of the walking dead i was disappointed in the quality after waiting so long for it to be released, at least 6 months later than i was told when it was being made. so when are telltale going to fix this? i've had to reset my playstation so many times i'm starting to worry i'm going to break it (which happened to another console of mines) im getting so frustrated with this, i'm ready to delete the game and ask for my money back.
Im losing hope tbh. I really want to play the upcoming episode by myself and instead ill have to watch lp. i just love paying money for the games i cant play.
Thread: black screen of death
