This is just utterly ridiculous. I have been playing Chapter 3 and 4 now on maybe ten different occations and this black screen happens every single time. My only solution is to uninstall Game of Thrones every single time I want to play again and install chapter for chapter and then decline the update whenever it comes up. I have purchased every single Telltale game and I must clarify that I love what you have created with these games Telltale but I'm really losing confidence and support in you now, not because the games are delayed or that there are flaws but for me its the way you don't give a rats ass about your PSNetwork customers. Why even release it to PS when there doesn't seem to be any proper soultions, bizarre amount of troubles with sound/synch and god knows what besides what are happening now with chapter 3 and 4. I have no idea what game testers are supposed to be doing but It's pretty strange that this huge problem comes as a surprise for you since it seems to happen for A LOT of players. I will continue to purchase your games because I am in love with them.. but I just want you to know that i have no confidence in the way you do anything besides the actual storyline game. And to clarify - yes I've been following every suggestion here and it works for the moment but since I'm a player who plays for like 1 hour at a time.. everytime i restart the console.. the problem is back. And NO i'm not downloading any patch.

EDIT: Now nothing works. Not even the re-install. I can't play Game of Thrones anymore on PS3.

  • Yup, i have the same problem. When i launch the gamr the screen goes black and ps3 freezes. I restarted the system a few times but it didnt work. Then i went to the ps store to download ep 4. It was downloaded, installed and when i launched the game there was actualisation. After it installed, the screen was still black :/

  • Thread: Downloaded episode 4 on PS3 in Europe, game will not start

I downloaded episode 4 of Got on psn in Europe and after installation the game will my start, and it goes straight to a black screen, can tell tale please provide a solution or advice.

  • So many people are having this problem. Myself included. What region are you guys all from? Is it just in Europe?

  • I'd really like to play the game. When will a new patch be out to fix the problem? My game was fine until I downloaded so four from the psn. I did not go into game and download it. Just downloaded it from the store.

I have the same exact problem, PS3 Europe, I download the 81 MB update, THEN episode 4 from the game screen and I got the black screen and system freeze after trying to re-launch the game.
I don't want to delete the save files because on of my friend is currently playing a run when visiting me...

So I guess I will wait for a patch or something, but note that this is a very severe issue...

  • Exact same situation here, PS3 Europe.

It was the case for me. I didn't experience any problem until episode 4. I updated the game to version 1.07 and the game launched properly.

  • Black screen issues as well in Ontario Canada. D/l'd episode 4 and the problem started. Uninstalled and reinstalled
all 4 episodes and hit start. Went through the update and the game played once. Won't start again though.
Did the install on the 29th at 1:46 pm

  • Seems to be just ps3..

  • I managed to get it working. Firstly I uninstalled and then redownloaded (what I thought was episode 1 - turns out it was the demo). I upgraded the demo and (by redownloading episode 1 and accepting the 1.7 update) when I started playing I noticed that I was logged onto save file 2 - it's possible that this is the cause (I'm a software tester and shit like this happens).

Hey, I've posted this a couple times already so I'm probably sounding like a broken record at this point, but I'll post it here as well. Basically to fix the black screen you have to uninstall and re-install the game so that the update pops up. Make sure that you hit cancel on the update, as the update seems to be what's causing the black screen. Spamming the cancel button a few times causes the update to go away. If you've denied the update then the game should work relatively normal, but you'll have to play offline. Hope this works for you, and hoping Telltale Games comes up with a real solution soon, but for now this should let you play the game..Just don't update..

  • Funny you should mention it...When the 1.7 update was installed and I launched the game, I was also logged onto save file 2. I logged into save file 1, then downloaded ep 4, and this is when I got into this black screen situation...

  • I uninstalled GoT and reinstalled and it worked for 1 day, then now its back to the black screen again. I don't get you guys haven't solved this problem yet, i want my money back its ridiculous to pay 5 dollars an episode but I only get to play it once...

  • I will wait till telltale sorts it. I shouldn't have to faff about and risk loosing my saves. But it has been four days already...

You shouldn't have any risk of losing your save files if you only delete the game from the Game Data Utility folder, not the Saved Data Utility folder, but I see your point, and waiting for Telltale Games to come up with a solution is a good idea. Though waiting for Telltale Games to fix this may take a while as it's already been over two months since this problem started...Best of luck to you either way.

  • Sure. It's version 1.00

@oliol Thank you for providing detailed steps on how you were able to work around the issue to play the game successfully. Could you please

Thread: EDIT: (I Have Answers & A Work Around For Black Screen Issue)

I have played episodes 1-3 without a hitch, (albeit the game was quite lagged during action sequences) until I decided to show a friend earlier this week the game and I got the black loading screen glitch which also froze my PS3 controller.

I thought that a patch would be with the latest episode, so I downloaded it and installed. The game still didn't work.

Upon reading discussions on this forum for possible solutions, I decided to delete the Game Of Thrones folder and re-download episode 4.
However! After re-downloading and installing again, seemingly okay... but then after that, it was NO WHERE TO BE FOUND.

I was super annoyed at this fact, only because the game takes roughly 3 hours for me to download, and takes up my bandwidth.

I am curious if I can play episode 4 without the other episodes installed?

I have downloaded each episode individually. I am from Melbourne, Australia.

    PLS HALP.

  • Do you have to reininstal all episodes or just ep one and four?

  • Same for me, yesterday I uninstalled and reinstalled the game (played offline and ignoring updates) worked fine, today black screen appeared again, uninstalled and reinstalled couple of times and still black screen. This is frustrating, really good game that you can't play, and the black screen problem has been here over couple of months..maybe? When Telltale is going to solve this problem?

  • Same here, I got to play it once, then it updated not it just crashes. Very unhappy.

  • Same here, I added episode 4, did the update and now black screen. I am on a PS3, I am buying the games individually, I am in the US, and I had no issues until after the update.

  • Guys i'm having the same problem and I have a question. My Game Data Utility folder have files for all the games I've played except Game of Thrones. Is it supposed to be like that? Could that be causing the problem? I read that people who have uninstalled and reinstalled the game have solved the issue; maybe the file in the Game Data Utility folder is being deleted somehow and reinstalling the game downloads the file again.

  • TelltaleMike said this to someone else in your situation.

If you are attempting the workaround that is mentioned in this thread, and you have save files with Episode 3 completed, you will not need to re-download Episodes 2 and 3 unless you want to replay them on another save slot, or rewind to them in your current saveslot.

  • I have the same problem and I'm getting sick of PS3 problems on this. First I couldn't download the game that I had bought and now it just won't start.
Is an update going to be available at some point ? I don't want to have to delete the game, resinstall, and play offline. I should be able to play without having to do some stupid workaround.
Never buying another Telltale game on PS3 that's for sure.

  • Same Problem here.
    Damn Telltale, really?

  • Just want to let everyone know that I have been playing this game multiple times and different days with no incident after doing this...
    1. Uninstall Game ( not Save files).
    2. Redownload and install Episode 1 and Demo from PSN
    3. Start Game, install Patch.
    4. When game loads up, goto Episode menu and only download Episode 4, then install Episode 4. Without rebooting game.
    5. Load up previous save game and play Episode 4.

Still have not tried re-installing episode 2 or 3, since I already played through those episodes on three separate files. If you need episode 3 to play I'm not sure if this would work.

  • Deleting save files but not the game seemed to work

  • Yeah I did the same, I deleted the save files but not the game and I could at least get past the black screen and to the main menu. HAven't started replaying the game yet as I'm finding it a little too disheartening to restart the game from the beginning again. I'll probably wait like a month, very disappointed about this as I was really looking forward to episode 4. This issue has really stolen a lot of the joy I derive from this game.

Deleting save files but not the game seemed to work

  • So reading the comments here it looks like it could be affecting only people who were logged on a secondary save file. My girlfriend plays the game as well and she was on save file two.
Any news on getting a real fix for this ?

  • Hello all!

**I have tried a work around for the black screen issue of the game not starting (that other people on here have also suggested) and I got my game working! **

I had to start all of the episodes over though, unfortunately, because I deleted my saves and re downloaded and re installed everything.

So if you want to play the latest episode or any others and can't because you're experiencing the black screen issue then this is exactly how I did it:

Game > Saved Data Utility > Game Of Thrones - Delete (triangle)
Game > Game Of Thrones (Folder) - Delete (triangle)

I then had to re download all the episodes by going into:
Playstation Network > Account Management > Download Management > Download List - There you should find all of the games you have downloaded from the Playstation network including Game Of Thrones. Start Downloading them.

**(NOTE: It is important that if you get the prompt at ANY time to download the update 1.07, press circle, this seems to be one of things causing the black screen, so whatever you do, DO NOT let it download and install.) **

Another thing I did was let episodes download in the background whilst playing through the an episode that I had just installed.
It is also important to note that when you get to the title screen you will be asked to sign into your Playstation account - If you sign in, you will be asked immediately to download the update - just keep pressing circle repeatedly and you will avoid this.
Every time I restarted my game this happened, but spamming circle works, the title page will fade to black and you will return to the main menu where you can select to play an episode. :)

So after the episodes are downloaded and installed, you can now play through them again without the blank screen... however throughout you will be prompted several times to install that update, (even during game) but if you just just hit circle once every time you are asked and if you are like me and just want to play the latest episode, then you can patiently avoid it.

I have to say as a huge fan of Game Of Thrones, so I was excited to play these games!
I am especially now excited after completing the fourth episode to play the fifth and sixth!

However, I have to say how thoroughly disappointed I am in how these episodes ran on my PS3.

As if not being able to download, install and play the games normally that I paid for was bad enough, but it actually ran like garbage and ruined a lot of the enjoyment for me.

Some of these issues include: Sound missing, subtitles not matching up properly, during action sequences the screen freezing and messing up crucial story lines

I could aid some of these glitches slightly but pausing it and waiting up to a minute, but as I said, it only helped a little bit..

    But man seriously!
Telltale, I am now a massive fan of this series, but please fix the issues with the PS3. Including actually being able to run the game smoothly.

  • Oh! I almost forgot, this original post was about the blank screen issue AND me not knowing whether you could play episodes without playing previous ones, turns out you absolutely can, but your choices will be made for you. Which I'm sure most people don't wish!

  • Telltale Mike, Not sure if this helps you but after reading a few posts it looks like this is an issue when players were logged on a secondary save file. I know I was and so were others on this thread. My saves are also renamed to not confuse them, (not sure if that's important but as a developer I know anything can be).
    Hope this is resolved soon.

Episode 4 will be available for EU PS3 players Friday, May 29th. We are currently looking into the issue regarding the black screen, if you

  • still no fix...... this is unbelievable.

  • Thread: Black Screen on PS3 after Downloading Episode 4

Game of Thrones just goes to black screen and freezes when I try to open it. I have to reset the Playstation to get out of it. It worked ok the first time I played Episode 4, but the next day it froze. Can not get past this black screen. All the other episodes worked ok. And it works on other user profiles on the same Playstation.

  • Thread: Blank Screen Game of Thrones

I started experiencing this after downloading the update after downloading episode 4. I would've have just deleted the data if it was available in Game Data Utility as suggested by some people, but GOT doesn't actually save data onto there.
Can telltale fix this? Is there a way to get this fixed? I will have to redownload the game and all the episodes again, and not update it, just to get it working.

  • I have exactly the same problem after downloading episode 4, can not even start the game and need to reset the system. Hope that soon Telltale will make fix for this bug.

  • I'm not asking how to delete the game. I'm just saying that I don't have a "game of thrones" file in the Game Data Utility folder and maybe that's what causing the problem. It's weird that this folder has a file for all the games except game of thrones.

It is not in Game Data utility folder. Goto the game and press triangle. Then delete from pop up menu.

  • I got the same thing today. The day before yesterday it started okay.

  • So i had the black screen problem, i fixed it by deleting the game and re downloading it, and all the episodes, and now it appears that my save game is gone. Is there anyway i can get the choices i chose before episode 4 without re playing the entire thing? (om PS3)
