Am I the only one who never even downloaded episode 3 but still got the black/frozen screen when I started the game to actually download the new episode? After I was forced to restart I tried it again, it allowed me to reach the update but I couldn't opt out of it. Now the entire game is broken, yet it obviously was not the fault of the new episode. Just started it up again since people are having some luck, but the problem persist... I would very much hate to have to delete the whole thing and redownload it...seeing as my internet connection is nothing more than a mifi, and downloads eat a ton of data... Would really love some light shed on this situation, with the hopes I can keep my saves (and my data).
Well, I believe most people (incl. me) got the black screen after playing episode 3 for the first time and trying to start the game a second time. It probably has to do with the save files. Perhaps their are multiple problems with regard to the black screen? I guess we just wait and see if Telltale can fix the problem.

Is there any info on why after playing episode 3 the game won't load? It just goes to a black screen. I'm in st louis mo and download season three the day is was available for download. I finished the episode last night and when i tried to play it again today it just goes to a black screen. can anyone give me a reason for this and when it will be fixed??
NOTE: In my case, I was unable to play it after downloading episode 3, not after playing it. I played it only when i denied the update and disconnected from internet after reinstalling the entire game. And after playing it, I got the black screen. BUT while I've heard deleting the saves fixes the problem, I had the problem FIRST appear right after I downloaded episode 3.
I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. I have made sure to pass all of the information you guys have provided, along to the team for further investigation. I will make sure to update this thread when I have any new information to provide.

Hello, everyone,
After spending almost a day, trying to figure out, what the problem is, installing, deleting and reinstalling the various episodes, I’m now pretty sure, that I know the reason for the blank screens now.
All in all by now we have four parts that we have to install:
Part 1 Trial
Part 1: Upgrade to full game
Part 2
Part 3
Also there is an upgrade, that tries to install itself when you start the game. Without this upgrade it’s impossible to connect to the PS-Network.
When I had the same problem with the blank screen back in episode 2, the upgrade seemed to be the problem. I always got the blank screen when I upgraded it, then after deleting and reinstalling I ignored the upgrade and it worked, even saving my progress during Episode 2
Now there seems to be a different problem:
The upgrade doesn’t seem to matter anymore and if you only want to play episode one with the full game upgrade, everything works fine (as long as you haven’t installed the other two episodes)
But as soon as you install the other two episodes…. Blank screen and the playstation freezes.
After trying several things out, I think the problem is the “Part 1: Upgrade to full game”. I tried to leave that out, just installing part 1: Trial, part 2 and 3 and the game starts normally and you can play part 1 (until the Trial-version ends), 2 and 3 (however, my save-games are not there and the game won’t save your decisions, even when you complete part 2 and try to start part 3, what’s kinda annoying, because the game decides all your former decisions)
As soon as I install the “part 1: upgrade”…. I get the Blank screen when I start the game. Even when installing it from “Episodes” in the game, you get the blank screen. I’ve tried everything. Installing it before episode 2 and 3, installing it afterwards, installing or not installing the PSN-upgrade, nothing works.
The only reason I can think of is that maybe the “Part 1: Upgrade to full game”-file is corrupted, can’t think of anything else anymore.
Really annoying, I bought the season pass and now all I can do is playing the parts separately with the game deciding any former choices I’ve made for me….
I have not yet tried to delete my save games until now... as there are also savegames from my friends there... also, if I really have to delete my save-game, how do I know that it's not happening again in Episode 4,5,6?... maybe it would be best just waiting for the rest of the episodes and installing them all together?
@Raptor81 Thank you for providing the extra information. I will make sure to pass it along to the team while they investigate further into the root cause of the issue. Can you please clarify if by 'Upgrade to Full game', that you are speaking of the 1.2mb size file that you download in order to activate the Full Game/Season Pass?

Yesterday I was able to play the Telltale game of thrones, but now whenever I try to open the game it just sits on a black screen. Anyone know how I can fix this?
I apologize for the inconvenience. Can you please clarify if you see the black screen when you select the game from your PS3's XMB, or do you see the black screen after starting the game, and choosing to continue your save file?
Just happened to me. I clicked on the game from the menu and black screen, game never comes on. It happened once, I restarted the PS3, and same thing. I can't exit by clicking the PS3 button or anything.
Update: Uninstalled and downloaded and installed from the PS Store. For some reason the normal Iron From Ice is messed up in the listing so I had to do the one labeled demo. Game loaded. DLed episodes 2 and 3 from the in game menu. When I clicked "Accept" for episode 3 instead of bringing me back to the main menu-black screen. Restarted, clicked on the game again. Black screen.
My apologies for any difficulties caused by this. If you are unable to start the game even after deleting and re-downloading it from the Playstation Store, I recomend try Restoring your PS3's File System and see if you are then able to start the game without experiencing a freeze. (Please make sure to read over the notes in the above page explaining that this process does not delete any games or content, but messages/custom music playlists may be reverted back to their original state.)

I see a black screen after starting the game from the xmb. I would uninstal'/reinstall but Im afraid to lose my save files and it apparently hasnt worked for other users. I just hope this problem gets fixed before episode 4 comes out.

I'm having the exact same problem. Tried restoring the file system and rebuilding the database, but still can't start the game from XMB, just a black screen and after a minute or so system stops responding. I was playing Monday night and then on Tuesday the game wouldn't work.
Had the same issue as well. Did some research online, and on this support board. I tried restoring the file system and rebuilding the database as well. Game still had the black screen. Then I deleted the game (but kept the data as I didn't want to lose saved progress). I re-downloaded the game. It prompted me for the latest download, I pressed circle to refuse the download. It prompted me several times to download the latest version, still avoided it. Then it allowed me to play. Still working. However, other posts I've read, people still can't get off the black screen. Hope it helps. Actually hoping when the next episode comes out, that those bugs are all worked out. Good luck.

Okay. For the record, that your proposed 'solution' requires the player to shell out extra money is ridiculous, but fine. So, when I delete the local save file and start from scratch the game starts. But once I copy/pasted the original save file back, our old friend the black screen returns.
So my problem is this: I want my original save files back, particularity my first 'blind' play-through of the game. That's not an experience I can replicate. And even if I gave them up as lost forever and started again, there's no guarantee that upon finishing episode 3, the same exact thing wouldn't happen.
Also, I shouldn't have found out by sheer accident that there's a PS3 sub-forum where people are reporting the exact same problem. That's important information to have, and you should have shared that.
Finally: So what is actually wrong with my/apparently a lot of other people's games? Has Telltale taken any steps to fix the problem yet?
Can you link the Ps3 - sub forum? Plus I do agree with you its ridiculous to PS+ just to save game files. The problem is on Telltales end and they need to fix it.

I have all three of the current episodes and the game used to work but now the screen justbturns black when i try and get to the start menu. Tried reinstalling to no avail. I have ps3.

Mike, why aren't you sharing with this user than many other PS3 users have been reporting the exact same situation for over a month and there has been no fix or even information as to why this is occurring? Rather than letting them believe their situation is a rare or unique occurrence.
I installed a new update on 5-12-2015, since then I've gotten a black screen every time I try to load the game. I have all 3 episoides installed, I'm connected to the internet, I've installed all the updates, why isn't this game working?
@spldbaby3 Can you please clarify what region/country you are currently located in? Also, were you able to play all 3 episodes before downloading and installing the new update?

Got PS3. After my original black screen, and deleted Game of Thrones, re-downloaded it, it worked again. Played and finished episode 1. Then it went back to the black screen, like others on the message board. I'm going to try patience next.
Having the same exact issue as everyone else here. Won't bother going into the step specifics because I don't want to contribute to any false perception of inconsistency. It's happening to everyone exactly the same way, some people have tried workarounds, others have been patient and waited for Telltale to solve it, no one has figured out how to fix it. I'm not going to try anything on my end unless it's going to lead to a solution. I imagine that most of the things people have tried and posted about might just be confusing to QA. So I'm going to sit and wait for the developers to fix it.
Since no one has posted their exact system specs, let me be the first. Running the game off a PS3 160GB Slim. I can get the exact model/SN if needed. No idea if it makes a difference, but being in technical support I know that details can't hurt for an issue of this size. And maybe everyone else is using the same model.
Region is North America. But people from other regions have reported the same issue, so it doesn't matter.
Got the latest update from yesterday. Updated via the XMB by doing a "Check for Updates" rather than actually launching the game.
I understand it's impossible to tell how serious this issue is, because if someone doesn't have an issue, they never investigate and you never hear from them. So for all we know we're the only people going through this right now. Or maybe everyone who has this game on the PS3 is having the same issue, and those we haven't heard from either just finished Episode 3 and haven't picked it up since, or were like me and kept an eye on the forums and never bothered to create an account and let their voices be heard. For me, the last straw was updating the game today and seeing the issue STILL isn't fixed.
Again, working in technical support I'm not surprised that this isn't being treated like a priority. Telltale has other platforms they're developing for, and other games, and if their big-budget HBO partnership bit doesn't work on the dinky little last-generation console then, well, tough luck. But just in case there's any misunderstanding on QA's part, as far as I'm concerned this bug renders the game I paid for unplayable. And if you think it's possible to fix it by wiping the save data, or by paying for a Plus account, then do it yourself and tell us how it goes. I for one don't have the time or patience. Not right now at least.
I am sorry Mike, but installing the latest update is what is causing the black screen. You should recommend people to delete the game (not the safe files) --> Install latest version from PSN --> Do not update the game (i.e. do not connect to the internet) --> Play. The game will ask to update or to connect with the internet several times, but by declining repeatedly, you can play. This worked for me (and others) who had the black screen problem.

I sincerely apologize for any difficulties caused by this. If you are currently affected by this and are updated to the latest version with all 3 available episodes installed, could you please try backing up your save data onto a USB flash drive, then remove it from your PS3 and delete the local Save Data on your PS3. Are you then able to start the game successfully, or do you experience the same issue?

Im pretty sure the issue is with the latest update cause when I deleted the previous updates and turned off my internet for future updates, I could play the game no problem.
Could you possibly take that local save file, and upload it to a File Hosting Website, then send me the download link to that save file in a PM? (To send a Private Discussion, click on my Username, and click on Private Discussion on the left hand side of the page.) Then reply here and let me know you've sent the PM.
I can't copy the data to my usb drive. My usb drive is formatted correctly and showing up but I don't have the option to copy there, only to online storage. I think Telltale chose to not allow the data to be copied offline.

To answer your three questions: No, no and no . They are looking into it though
Hello, Mike.
You're welcome. Really hope this helps to fix the problem.
Yes, exactly, that's the one. The small file to activate the full game.

When you remove the local save files you can start the game. If you try and put the original save back, the black screen returns.
