  • My girlfriend and I are planning to watch a war film next weekend, just because we're in the mood for one. We've narrowed it down to Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, and Apocalypse Now, all of which we've never seen. Does anybody have one to recommend over the others?

  • I've only seen Saving Private Ryan out of all of those hehe. :P But still, I'd suggest it because it's a damn great realistic portrayal of war. And when I mean it's damn realistic, I really fucking mean it!

Also, strange choice of genre for movie night with your date lol. Hope you don't mind all the blood, guts, and PTSD in the end!

    The Nice Guys short review

    enter image description here

It's been ages since I've done a review. I've been writing essays and shit back and forth for college, so I don't feel like putting a lot of effort into this one even though I liked the movie. So what you see is what you get.

So I recently saw The Nice Guys and I thought it was great. It's directed by Shane Black, and it stars Russel Crowe, Ryan Gosling, and Angourie Rice. The film follows Holland March (Gosling) and Jackson Healy (Crowe). March is a cynical, down-on-his-luck private investigator who pretty much sucks at his job. Healy is a hired enforcer that beats people up for money, but is the more professional type of the duo. Both come together and put their skills to the test when they partake on the job of investigating the alleged suicide of a porn star.

    The Positives

    • The best performances I've seen from Gosling and Crowe in years. Gosling is no longer that pretty boy actor anymore. The man has range. I never expected to see him shine in a comedy before. I don't remember Crowe in anything that was outstanding in the past 5 years, so I was happy to finally see him in a role that showcases his acting abilities. Essentially, both Gosling and Crowe have great chemistry with one another. They are like the Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon franchise. Dialogue they have together is witty and hysterical, they play off each other so well that they're pretty much inseparable.

    • Speaking of great performances, Angourie Rice was certainly something. Her character is the daughter of Ryan Gosling's character, so we may assume that she's going to be very annoying. As a matter of fact, that is the complete opposite of what happens. She's actually integral to the story, somehow being a major help to the two protagonists' investigation. Not only that, but she has terrific dialogue as well. Except one scene near the end that I will get into in the negatives section of the review.

    • I would say Shane Black is a much better writer than he is a director. Mr. Black knows how to write comedies very well. Except for Iron Man 3 because nothing about that was funny lol. But in all seriousness, the comedy in The Nice Guys was gold. Direction wasn't bad either, but Shane Black's writing was simply on point here.

    • The film captures the 1970's so god damn well. Everything from the aesthetics of the time period to the music, the film felt like it belonged in the 70's.

    • The film feels fresh. It feels like the revival of a dying sub-genre that is the crime-comedy. Okay, I might be over-exaggerating that, but not many recent ones come to mind. We've been getting an influx of mega blockbuster stuff for the past 6 years, that it simply feels great to experience a film that is different. Not saying I didn't enjoy myself with that blockbuster stuff, but you have to know when it starts to get tiresome. Thank you Shane Black for bringing this back to us!

    The Negatives

    • The ending. The ending for this film was extremely abrupt.

    • While I did think the daughter's character was great, there was one scene in the film involving her that really pissed me off. I won't spoil it as it happened near the end, but what occurred in the scene felt like it did not belong in the movie. It was the cheesiest, most cliched thing I've ever seen.

Overall: The Nice Guys is a refreshing film to see after all these years. After seeing the trailer for it for the first time, I was 100% hyped to see.The film features great performances, great comedy, and a very intriguing investigation. Do not pass this one up.

    Grade: A

  • Ah, I see. If you got through Hannibal Lecter's stuff, then you're more than ready haha.

Well, I'd still say Saving Private Ryan will suit you both just fine. You'll be blown away by the first few minutes of the film alone. Seriously it's some pretty hefty stuff. Tell me what you guys thought of it.

Was it when she stops Jackson from killing John Boy or whatever his name was that was trying to kill them? Yeah, I didn't like that part either, her reasoning for not wanting someone who was trying to kill them dead is never really explained in this movie, and that kind of bugged me.

Also, if you're looking for a great crime-comedy film, I'd recommend The Other Guys, if you haven't seen it already.

  • Just finished watching The Nice Guys, and like what ChuckTheLizard said above me, it's a great film. His pros/cons for the movie are pretty much the same as mine, the performances were outstanding, especially Crowe and Rice, the story and writing was great, but the ending did feel a bit abrupt. Rather than just rehash what he said, I'll just tell you my grade for the movie.

  • Yea, that's the scene I'm talking about. It felt so out of place in a film like this. The hitman nearly killed them all on multiple occasions, I can never understand how she came to the conclusion of letting him live. I mean, I guess it's because she's a little girl still with that peaceful mentality, but seriously kid get the hell outta here with that. This is adult work! Plus, when she said "I'll never talk to you again," that just did it for me. Cliche'd, most childish thing I've ever heard.

I did see The Other Guys, but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. Still pretty funny, but it's not necessarily memorable in my opinion. I only remember the Grand Theft Auto quote Will Ferrell said.

I just saw Dope recently and it was pretty... fucking dope. That's it. That's your review. Go and find it on Netflix or something on your free-time. It's a very good film.

  • Well, I finally watched Saving Private Ryan, thanks to the suggestion of @ChuckTheLizard, and of course I had to cry, how could I not? I also want to dislike Upham for what he did (Or didn't do), but I can't find myself able to, since I feel like I'd be just like him in such situations.

And my goodness, the first thirty minutes aren't a drama film. That's a full-on horror movie.

  • Haha! I knew you'd enjoy it. The first 30 mins were certainly true horror. What a way to throw your audience into the movie.

Still, I really hate Upham for being a coward. He let his comrades die man! Can I blame him? No, I suppose not. But don't expect a pat on the back because that stuff don't fly with me.

  • Steven Spielberg was going for realism, however. And there's always cowards in the world, so I guess he accomplished his job. He probably was thinking well I've been depressingly realistic for the first half of this movie, so why not go all the way!

    Warcraft

Being a video game adaption my expectations for this movie were pretty low considering the bad video game adaptions that we had to put up with in the last decade.

The plot is very interesting and it had me hooked on throughout the whole movie. Although I haven't played the video game(s) there are a few scenes/things that were clearly nods/easter eggs to the games. You should pay attention to every scene because I've heard some people say that they were confused and had a hard time following the plot. Personally, I had no problem and was able to understand everything. All you need is a brain.

The movie has an interesting set of characters with Durotan and Lothar being my two favorite ones. The movie invests enough time on character development and every character has his own moment to shine, giving you the opportunity to really care about most if not all of them.

The cgi and the fight scenes were great. The orks look realistic and their facial expressions are really good along with the good animation. Seeing the orks fight was so fucking bad ass and breathtaking.

I have only 2 minor complaints regrading the movie. 1-2 casts felt out of place. I'm not saying that the actors are bad or untalented but I felt like they didn't fit in the roles well. The only character that I can think of right now is the guardian, I felt like he was misscast. My second complain about the movie is that it felt a lot like a prequel. The movie set up a whole new universe and it felt like it was building up for a sequel and the movie ends with a lot of question and "if's". This could be a good thing too now that I can think of it because I'd love a second movie which is most likely the route they are going with.

    Overall score: 9/10

  • Well I just saw the shallows. Too much shark, too much boob, too much slow motion, too much sitting on a rock, too much flammable whale blood, too much mom dying cliche, not enough sharks. Good CG though. Final grade: C

  • I just saw Finding Dory. It was surprisingly really well done for a sequel to such a classic childhood movie of mine. I'd give it a B+/ A- :)

    ...

  • Just got back from Independence Day Resurgence, and I thought it was pretty good, for a dumb action movie that is. While not as good as the original, it did have some good aspects to it, such as the special effects, but that has never really been an issue with a Roland Emmerich movie. But this movie does have way too many characters (again, another issue with Emmerich movies), and the ending and set up for the sequel felt a bit rushed.

    Pros:

-World is large and epic in scope

    -Fantastic visual effects

    -Amazing motion capture

    -Exhilarating action sequences

-Did have effort put into it and doesn't feel like a desperate cash grab.

    Cons:

    -Confusing plot

    -Boring and bland characters

-Sub-par acting from the human characters

    -Sluggish pacing

-Doesn't offer much for viewers who aren't familiar with the Warcraft franchise.

    Final Verdict:

As far as video game movies go, this is one of the better ones, but that's not really saying much. While there are good things about it, I can't help but feel let down by this film. Maybe it's just because I'm not at all familiar with the franchise.

    Final Score:

    5/10

    4. Hostel
    5. 3 Ninjas

Now this was a surprise. I am so glad that this didn't follow the typical Hollywood horror film trend by sucking hard. Damn, was this a solid film.

    enter image description here

    Pros:

-Great opening sequence. Really grabs your attention.

    -Good astmosphere

-Smart and well thought out script

    -Great sense of tension.

-Didn't over rely on jump scares. Actually delivered some pretty clever scares and each one improves after the other.

-Poignant chemistry between Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga

    -Madison Wolffe's performance.

    -Nasty and intimidating villain

-That demon nun will haunt my nightmares

    Cons:

-Has a few scenes and subplots that don't go anywhere.

-Some cheesy effects that killed the tension a little bit

    Final Verdict:

After sitting through really terrible horror movies for the past few years like The Gallows and Sinister 2, this film is a huge breath of fresh air and in my opinion blows the first Conjuring film out of the water. I'd highly recommend it.

    Final Score:

    8.5/10
