The First Great Monkey Island Race of 2010

Okay, I told apenpaap I'd do this once MI2: SE was announced, so here goes. The First Great Monkey Island Race of 2010 is within sight, so we're starting the thread early so we have more time to coordinate.

Dates and Times

The race is set to take place on the week of July 12-18, that is the week after the release of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition. Participants will set their own race times and race on their own schedule during the week. Approximate race times will be submitted to me so I can try and draw up a viewing schedule, as well as to make it easier for me to keep track of what times to document. Any participants who have a problem with these dates can be accommodated.

Broadcasting and Documenting

Documentation in the form of a post in this thread at the start and end of each game (or chapter of Tales) is required. This is how I will record times and determine winners. If you wish, you may time yourself and submit times along with your "finished" posts.

To clarify: If you do not post in this thread at the start and finish of each game, I cannot record your times.

In the past, a few of us broadcasted our races on Livestream, and it was a lot of fun, both for us and the people watching. However, this can cause sluggish performance in some games and can be difficult to make work with others, so if you prefer you can also provide updates on your progress over Twitter, post in this thread, or even come to one of the Livestreams and chat with everyone. What's fun about this is the added community element. If you choose to document, please provide a link to where you will be documenting and an estimated time (and time zone) that you will begin playing each game so I can add where and when to watch next to your name on the entrants list.

If anyone's interested in using Livestream and needs help, feel free to ask. Several of us have experience with it from the last two races and will be happy to help.

Rules

Currently, these rules are mostly unaltered from the last race. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve them, let me know.

It is required that you play all five games in the series in order. Sequence breaking is not allowed. You must play Secret, Lechuck's Revenge, Curse, Escape (yes, Escape), Narwhal, Spinner Cay, Leviathan, Trial and Execution, and Pirate God in that order.

Both editions of The Secret of Monkey Island are allowed.

LeChuck's Revenge: Special Edition is not allowed in this race. However, if you absolutely do not have access to the original game, you may use the Special Edition and you will be granted a five minute handicap.

The hint feature is not allowed.

In games that feature voice acting, voices must be enabled.

LeChuck's Revenge and Curse must be played in not-Lite and Mega Monkey modes.

If you choose to play the original version of The Secret of Monkey Island, text speed must be set to default settings +1 (or two below the maximum). If you choose to play the Special Edition, you must switch over to classic and set the text speed to maximum. However, if you play Special Edition in classic mode, the same rules apply as if you were playing the original version. LeChuck's Revenge is to be played at the same text speed as the original version of Secret.

The double-click room teleport in Curse and the room exit button in Escape are allowed.

Skipping dialogue or cutscenes is not allowed. Bypassing optional dialogue is allowed, but once a dialogue option is picked, you must let it play out uninterrupted. There is an exception for accidentally picking an identical dialogue section a second time (especially in Tales).

The credits count as a cutscene. You're finished with a game when you see "Turn off your computer and go to bed", "Turn off your computer and do something constructive", when Curse auto-quits, when Escape's credits stop rolling, and when the Tales episodes return to their menus.

Since the Special Edition credits are longer, you can consider yourself finished when the original version credits finish if you are playing that version. However, you'll either have to self-time or alt-tab out of the game, as these games don't let you return to the menu during the credits.

There is a possible glitch in LeChuck's Revenge where the skeletons will get stuck in a dancing animation during the bone song if you've adjusted the text speed. If this happens to you during the race, you may wait until the bone song music ends and then press Esc to continue the race.

Saving the game during the race is allowed, and may be a good idea in case of a game crash (though I only see that as being likely to happen in Escape). Loading saves made during the race is fine (but other than a crash, why would you want to?). If your game crashes and you haven't saved, er...I really have no idea what happens then.

The use of saves made outside the game is only allowed if the saves strictly take you to a previous point in the game. That is, you may not gain any new inventory or bypass any puzzles, even if you also lose inventory and puzzles become unsolved. If the save has the exact same inventory and solved puzzles or fewer, you may use it.

Certain puzzles in Escape from Monkey Island cause problems on certain PCs. The use of previously made saves in order to advance the game is allowed as long as it is only for the following problems:
The game locks up when the chess players start fighting.
The raft locks up when Guybrush tries to disembark at Pegnose Pete's.
The timing for the boulder puzzle is incorrect because you have a faster PC.
You may NOT use it to skip Monkey Kombat.
If you need to make use of this rule, please try to make sure of where you are in the game ahead of time. I know that last time, I accidentally skipped picking up the chicken grease and whacking Herman with the coconut but also had to pick up the Eau de LeChuck twice, so I'll be trying not to make those mistakes again.
Feel free to suggest any other situations where a problem with the game necessitates the use of saves.

If you should load a saved game for any reason, you may not reuse an old Monkey Kombat chart.

Since we're splitting the race apart, the winner will be determined by time. Time will be determined by forum posts made at the start and finish of each game.

Prizes

We have prizes now! The only thing is I'm not 100% certain what they are! Here's what I think we can expect:
First place - An unidentified gift from Telltale! Thanks, Nikasaur and Jake!
Second and third place - A Steam copy of Jolly Rover, courtesy of St.LouisRibs and Games, Gold, and Glory!

After the Race

You didn't think the race was over when the last person finishes Pirate God, did you? As sort of a celebration, eight of us will be choosing one game and streaming it again after the race, this time for fun and taking suggestions from the audience. We'll be going through all the jokes we skipped over during the race, so it should be a good time!

We'll be determining times after the race is over. The games will be played in order, so we'll be taking turns to decide when to play each of our games.

So what is this, do we play any MI game and time it then post the time? or do we play all and time it?
  • edited March 2010
It's a three day race to see who can finish the entire Monkey Island series in the shortest amount of time. Here are the threads for the last two races:

The Great Monkey Island Race of 2009
The Second Great Monkey Island Race of 2009

Here's a brief history. Before chapter 5 came out, there was a thread encouraging people to run the series in a marathon the day before the game came out. Then someone said that somebody should stream it over the internet. I accepted the challenge, and while I was testing the streaming software, Icedhope and I decided to make a race of it. Iced, Secret Fawful, and I were the only three participants, and nobody finished. I played for 18 hours straight and only got into the start of Tales, if I recall.

So after chapter 8 came out, more people were interested in participating, so we held a second race at the end of December. This one was more well-thought, and we spread it over three days. OzzieMonkey won (by five freaking hours, wtf?), I took second, and apenpaap took third.

You play them all and time them individually. You don't have to play them all in a row.
  • edited March 2010
We tried that in the first race. Oh god, did we ever fail. By the time I reached Monkey Kombat, I was falling asleep.

This contest doesn't start until after the SE is released, anyways.

    Agreed.

I'm in...but I'm playing the not-SE versions of SMI, and MI2 via ScummVM, for 2 reasons: 1)I think the old VGA version SMI looks better than the old-school setting on SMI:SE, and 2) because when I actually do play MI2LR:SE for the first time, I want to take my time and thoroughly enjoy it.
  • edited March 2010
I didn't say it was immediately after. I intend to get in a good play-through of MI2:SE before the race, so the race will likely be my second run of the game. Besides, the race is almost definitely going to run Friday-Sunday, and the game is likely to release on a Tuesday.

Anyway, the details are going to remain fairly fluid until we get closer to the game's launch.

    I THINK I'm in.

I can't really say if it's a definite decision for now since I only have 90/180 minutes per day to go online (until summer vacation) and that is not enough to finish any of the games for sure. Plus I do not have a clue if I'll be able to fix my Escape copy.
  • edited March 2010

Well, like I said, the race won't be until summer, so it may work out for you. And what's wrong with your Escape? Maybe we can help.

I'll add you to the list as a maybe, then.

You either have to be fast or highly caffeinated. It took OzzieMonkey 16 hours last time, and he finished five hours faster than anybody else. If you really want to attempt the race in a single segment, that's fine with me, so long as you make posts here at the start and finish of each game/chapter. Are you in, then?
  • edited March 2010
So... do we play the games all in a row or can we start and stop?

If it's in the summer holidays I might have a go at doing it non stop :D I'll probably end up setting up a Twitter account just to document this.
  • edited March 2010
In the first race, we all started at the same time and played them all in a row. It was a disaster and nobody finished. In the second race, we broke it into three days (Secret and MI2 on Friday, Curse and Escape on Saturday, and Tales on Sunday), and everybody played on their own schedule, posting their start and finish times here for me to record. So if you want to try playing them all in a row, I don't see any reason why you can't, but I wouldn't recommend it.

And yeah, we're trying to set these things up during the summer and winter holidays, so that the most people will have time to do it. There's also talk of a Sam and Max race, but that has yet to materialize. We'll probably have a better idea once more information comes out on season 3.
  • edited March 2010
This looks awesome. I'm gonna see what my times are like on the games compared to the last race's, and work out this livefeed business first, then get back to you on whether I'm in or not :)
  • edited March 2010
Oh, that's something I forgot to mention. Livestream is very easy to get working. We chose it over Justin.tv and Ustream because Livestream has a program called Procaster that allows you to broadcast from your desktop without having to use any sort of virtual webcam software.

But yeah, if anyone needs help with Livestream, apenpaap and I can help.
  • edited March 2010
I failed to see the First Monkey Island race (one of which, I'm kicking myself for not seeing even though I heard it being unsuccessful) but I managed to view the Second race and had a ton of fun spectating, helping and conversing with everyone else via the livestreams.

You can count me in for sure as a spectator! I um.... currently just own the first chapter of Tales... working on getting SE edition of Secret and LR.
  • edited March 2010
I'm considering this. Other than play the games, what do I actually have to do?
  • edited March 2010
Pretty much, it goes like this: play all five games, without skipping dialogue or cutscenes, and make a post on here every time you start or finish a game or chapter. If you want, you can put up a video stream of it, but that's just for fun, it's not required. It's all more detailed in the first post.
  • edited March 2010
Just posting your times is enough, but Streaming it is a lot of fun for everyone.

    EDIT: Got ninja'd

Cheers, I'll look into this streaming doodah - if I can get my webcam to work first, that is.
  • edited March 2010

There will be a sam and max, race...I'm writing the rules as we speak, it was orginaly going to be me playing through season one and season 2, and the cartoon play, while I was doing Iced things such as eating, and sleeping.
  • edited March 2010
No reason you can't still do that and have a race, you know.
  • edited March 2010
You know your right, I think up to the launch will be the marathon, and then before the finale to be the race...Guru, your my friend.
  • edited March 2010
    Aww, shucks.

The offer to officiate the race still stands. I figure it'll be easier for me to record all the times and stuff if I end up watching and not playing. This one's your baby, though, so it's up to you.
  • edited March 2010
I would really like to participate, but I'm afraid I'll just never find the time.
  • edited March 2010
That's one reason we're doing it in the (northern hemisphere) summer. And besides, we're very accommodating. Heck, I didn't even play three of the first four games in the second race because I had a schedule conflict (I substituted in my times from the unfinished first race). As long as you post your times, I personally wouldn't mind if you spread your race out over a whole week.
  • edited March 2010
Those were some goodtimes, though... I'm still wanting to through a few dollars to a prize for first place.
  • edited March 2010
I'm still hoping that Telltale might throw in an episode for the winner. That might be too much to hope for in a fan-organized contest, though. I also have another idea for a prize, but I'll have to ask a favor to get it.
  • edited March 2010
    Mwahahahahahahaha!

We'll see if you're still that fast this summer.

As for the schedule, may I suggest we reserve an entire week for this? So people can decide which days they want to play which games for themselves. For example: perhaps I'll play Secret on Monday, Revenge on Friday, Curse and Escape on Saturday and Tales on Sunday, while you play all four lucasarts games on Tuesday and Tales on Friday.

EDIT: Also, Guru, did you remember to PM the people on the PM list?

I did remember to PM them. I just didn't PM anybody who'd already posted here.

I like the idea of doing it over a whole week, but if we do I'm going to be more adamant about getting the participants to give me a time and date that they intend to start each game. Some people were good about that last time, but some just ignored it.

There needs to be a timer built into ScummVM that uploads the time to an online database as soon as you complete the game.

That doesn't do much for the special editions, Escape, or Tales. Besides, without a built-in function for it, you'd never know if cutscenes or dialogue was skipped.

You know, the people who were participating in the race, and just chatting were doing a good job of keeping track of our time for us.
