I don't really think its that bad. I for one like the normal front cover as well as the slip cover, so I could just chop off that cut-out part and swap between covers. To me, its no big deal.

i think i will scan it and make an insert so i can swap between two covers without the box.

Could someone confirm whether or not the dvd has cutscene commentaries? Please.

    I really want to know.

There are entire episode commentaries with most of the major project leaders, including Ryan Jones, Dave Grossman, Mark Darin, etc.

They're very cool; they're probably my favorite thing on the DVD.

So how does that work? Is that on the actual episodes themselves, or do you mean its video files on the dvd of every cutscene of every episode?

Separate video files. Basically it's like watching the episodes instead of playing them, but with the developers "watching it with you" and commenting and joking about various things, as well as talking about how some things came to be there, what was thrown out, and how things were made.

Can you watch it without commentaries, like on Sam & Max?

Um, is that just the cutscenes or the gameplay footage as well?

just cutscenes, that make up the story

Wow, I'm very glad to hear about the commentary!

I can't wait to hear it. I'm surprised that Ryan Jones is one there, as he is just a concept artist. But the whole look and feel of the entire game is basically built around his art as there isn't much difference between the art and the actual finished project. And he is an awesome artist, so I'm actually pretty happy that he'll be on there.

Well here in the US it isn't spring, it is summer here. Spring ended last month, so TTG is already way late in shipping the Deluxe Edition by end of Spring.

Spring on the northern hemisphere (inculding the USA) ends when the Sun is right above the tropic of Cancer. That's 11:28 GMT on June 21st this year.

I just hope this deluxe edition, and the voodoo cards are worth the wait. Rushing the process would only cause lesser quality products to be sent.

No one's complaining that the cutouts exist, but that they are plastered all over the back of the "special" slipcover.
  • edited June 2010
There's also the huge dotted line with the scissors drawn on the back and the letters saying Cut Here. Why anyone would ever want to CUT UP THE COLLECTIBLE SLIPCOVER I DON'T KNOW. Maybe if I was five and wanted my own characters to play with....I wish it had been Ryan Jones art at least. No complaining intended though.

I am severely disappointed with the slip cover. Is there even anything on the sides for when you put it on a shelf? I was expecting something more along the lines of a special edition DVD movie slip cover which actually looks nice and epic. This all-white-except-for-the-awesome-cover slipcase with stupid cutouts on the back is ridiculous. Now I'm not even going to use it. Good thing I preordered and didn't have to actually pay extra for it. Otherwise I'd be quite furious. I guess I'll print out a custom inlay to replace the regular one on the DVD case instead of this really bad slip cover.

Seriously, way to let us all down who were waiting excitedly for this special Purcell slip cover. I really was expecting it to be better than the regular designed cover not worse. Such a disappointment.

There is. Telltale Games logo and Tales of Monkey Island logo, and the spine positioning matches all the other Telltale DVDs.

The slipcover is the same as shown on the website and people thought it was awesome then. I don't understand why people are furious at the cutouts because if you cut that off, then you have the memoirs on the back like every other Monkey Island Cover. You can just slip the cut out cover into the plastic and there you go.

Actually, I think it would be fine (finer?) if they were original concept art like the one Tope showed, instead of being taken out directly from the game. I mean, it's not like we're discovering any of these poses or clothes or anything.

I thought this, but my DVD hasn't shipped yet, so I dunno if it's a workable idea or not.

Why would they send me a chore? And besides that, who is going to deface a slipcover for a DVD?

Ok, that's good. So I can still use it. Still expected more from it, though. Oh well...

If you cut the cutouts out then you ruin the slipcover. It will cease to work as a slipcover because you just used scissors to cut through the bottom (or top) which thereby disposes of any friction holding it together and turns into one long piece of cardboard which can't enclose anything, let alone a DVD case. Unless you use tape to tape it together again......if you didn't already warp the leftover pieces of cardboard shaping the cutouts by cutting them out. But using tape is just stupid.

Technically, you could put something inside the slipcover to support it/protect the front (I'm thinking a thick stack of newspaper) and cut out the cutouts using an X-Acto knife. Then you'd have an intact slipcover with cutout-shaped holes in the back of it. Which would still suck, but at least it would still be functional.

I just want a regular nice looking back on the slipcase, that looks like it was made by professional game developers, not like it was a misprint from a Lucky Charms box.

Yeah, that's the dream. I was just saying that it's possible to cut out the back without totally destroying the slipcover. That doesn't make me any less unhappy about what's on the back.

At most 10 9 8 more days for them to start shipping (Deluxe Edition) by the end of Spring.

At this point, I really hope that the deluxe edition doesn't ship for the next couple of days at least, so that I have enough time to decide whether I really want the deluxe edition or would rather have my extra $15 back and get the Standard Edition instead. After all, the primary reason why I bought the deluxe edition was for the Purcell slipcover. Now, I'm not so sure. In fact, the more I think about it, the more disappointed I feel. Oh, maybe I'll ask you all here. Should I cancel my Deluxe order and get the Standard Edition instead? I didn't buy any other MI merch with it.

Fawful, can you post pics of the spines of the slipcover, so we can see if that also sucks?

I'm giving serious consideration to the idea that if I do get the deluxe edition, then I will either: a) high-res scan the front (and maybe back) of the slipcase and post it on here so that others don't need fail printed on cardboard in order to get the image; b) scan the front of the slipcover and use that to create a design for a better slipcover -- like enlarging the Purcell boxart to fit the whole front and extend onto the spine while printing the actual case's back to be reprinted on the back of the slipcase as well -- and then post my work to these forums so people can have it for themselves as well; or c) both.

[edit] come to think of it, I believe that there is a version of the Purcell art already posted on this website somewhere, so I may not even need to scan the front.[/edit]

Also, since TTG made Strong Bad's Cool Game, it boggles my mind that they obviously don't watch his e-mail videos, because one of them specifically says that cereal boxes that have cardboard cutouts on the back are a scam and to avoid such crap. How much worse then is it to be on the back of a DVD slipcover that hundreds, perhaps thousands of people have been, up til now, excited about getting?

Here's a link to the Strong Bad e-mail I'm referring to, or click here to start right at the place where he says back-of-box cutouts are crap.

I really do also hope that the map does turn out to be more than a handkerchief with the ingame map printed on it. They should at least "cut along the dotted line" when they make the map for sale as a professional collector's item. ugh, I'm not sure I want to run the risk of buying this stuff and then throwing some of it away.

I've attached a pic of my order. I didn't buy voodoo cards, so shouldn't my DVD have shipped by now? Or did the Deluxe Edition have a bonus voodoo card? I can't remember.

My order just has Deluxe edition

What is Deluxe edition package ?

@chyron why would you throw it away, is that that harmful to look at things that aren't what you expected ? Personally I take what i'm given.
  • edited June 2010
Deluxe Edition is the disc w/ slipcover.
Deluxe Edition Package is the rest of the Monkey Island related merchandise that comes bundled with it.. or so that's what I understand.

idk, if you have anything that says "Deluxe Edition" whether it has one entry or two or several, I bet it's all the same when it's sent out. It just has something to do with their ordering system.
  • edited June 2010
I think, Chyron, if you started doing some of the things you stated, you'd end up "ceasing" and "desisting" pretty soon. I am still getting the deluxe package, despite mild disappointment on the slipcover and map (all the people being reeeeally mad about the slipcover on here, look at the awesomeness that secret fawfull managed to whip up pretty quickly). Things like the button, which I will wear, and the coaster, which I will use, are nice little geeky things to have about and remind you of what was a great resurrection of a great game.

Oh no no no. No you can't. You see I printed a COPY on paper, cut it to size, and then slipped that into the cover. Sorry about the misinterpretation. I don't know if the actual collectible slipcover would fit in the plastic or not.

because, even if it is hideous, you wouldn't cut up the slipcover.

You wouldn't get your money back if your order is older than (I think it was) 60 days. You would get a coupon. At this point, considering you didn't buy anything else and you wouldn't actually get money back, and would have to pay for shipping, I'd say cancelling it and re-ordering is probably pointless. You might save a few dollars but I'm not sure it would be worth it. You might want to wait until you get it and then resell the "deluxe" part to someone who regrets not getting it (or wants a second one or something), that would probably make you more money.
  • edited June 2010
So....the deluxe edition...I may have waited three months or so, but I'm thinking I'm going to keep my order.
